Hawaii isn't ditching football. So nobody get their hopes up for playing out west just yet.

Like a lot of G5 schools thay will have to find a way.Rainbow Warrior football has too much pride and need to identify themselves amongst mainland universities.

They were just poking the state legislators for coin.....

You would think with Hawaii having the special benefit of a visiting team being
allowed an additional game by the NCAA for playing there that it would have
helped them more. Guess the right teams do not take them up on that as well
as they hoped.

MWC would drop to 11 teams and would lose their championship game. plenty of reason to replace Hawaii if they leave.

interesting domino to consider if Hawaii drops and UTEP moves to MWC, that would leave CUSA with 13. CUSA could then-

1. Stay at 13
2. Add UMass
3. Add another FCS (please no)
4. Bump a team back to the Sun Belt, giving both CUSA and the Belt 12 members.
5. Beg the American Athletic to go to 14 by taking UMass and one member from C-USA (probably would be UTSA to keep Cincinnati in the East Division)

AAC West - Navy, UTSA, Houston, SMU, Tulane, Memphis, Tulsa
AAC East - UMass, Cincinnati, UConn, Temple, East Carolina, UCF, USF

C-USA West - Rice, North Texas, Louisiana Tech, Southern Miss, Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee
C-USA East - Marshall, Old Dominion, Charlotte, UAB, Florida Atlantic, Florida International

Wouldn't make sense with UTEP available.

UTEP would love to get into the Mountain West Conference. They would be in a better basketball conference, the travel is better and they can recruit California.

But UTEP is not in the heart of Texas. UTSA or Texas State would be better schools for recruiting Texas. The basketball for both schools would have to improve significantly in the MWC. But to be able to recruit both Texas and California would be a huge advantage for the MWC.

I think UTSA would be the first choice of the MWC, followed by UNT and then Rice. The huge markets of San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston would be too appealing to the MWC for them to pass up.

Maybe they would be the first choice of the MWC, but I am not sure they would be the first choice of the schools.

North Texas sat on an island as the only Texas school during their Sun Belt stint, and before that they hated the West coast travel in Big West. Their AD made comments that they were excited to be in an central/eastern timezone conference with other Texas schools.

UTSA had an option at MWC, CUSA, and SBC as the WAC was imploding. Their AD said they were exited with CUSA because of the other Texas schools.

Rice... They could be an option since they were left behind while their rivals bolted to AAC but is in the eastern part of the state.

Meanwhile, Texas State is a lone wolf in the Sun Belt.

Texas State would be the easiest to pick off, but if I were the MW, Id move strongly into Texas rather than dipping a toe into the state. Add UTSA, N Texas, and Rice. That gives the MW access to 3 major media markets. The MW could also go with Texas State, N Texas, and Rice---that would give them access to Dallas and Houston and liley significant coverage in the San Antonio-Austin markets. That might be the best long term move.

hawaii is not going to drop football. if the mwc ever needs to add anyone, it will be utep. a western school one time zone over from the rest of us and a school that fits in much better with the schools in that conference than with odu and marshall and middle tenn. etc.
