RE: MAC TV Deal
$600k/yr is certainly better than we had before but thought it would be higher. Then I remembered how crappy 50% of the conference is....

RE: MAC TV Deal
That's significantly better than the $100k/year but still lags behind the AAC.
The AAC inked a 7 year, $126MM deal with ESPN last year, which comes out to $18MM/year. Between 12 members, that's $1.5MM per member, still more than twice the MAC's share. Plus they get Thursdays and Fridays instead of Tuesdays and Wednesdays and better network placement. But it's an improvement.

I wonder if there are any payouts like how the MWC contract is done where a specific team gets a bonus for being picked up for a ESPN/2 game.

The AAC also won the National Championship in basketball last year. The MAC doesn't deserve AAC level money.

I agree we are no where close to AAC but we are still a 50% raise away from CUSA money. I dont pay attention to the other sports...is CUSA that much better of a product?

No they are not but they are primarily on Fox Sports so possible we took a small haircut to remain with ESPN (probably the right call for exposure) and I think they are still under their old deal which included teams now in the AAC.

I bet the MAC would tell you even though the contract is less, they make up for it in exposure. The MAC is much more seen than C-USA, IMO.

RE: MAC TV Deal
Really this TV deal will get us $500k more and the playoff will get us around $1mil more per year. That $1.5mil per year is what some say this full cost scholarship stuff will cost. We are basically breaking even in relation to our current revenue/expenses to still play FBS ball.

This part is huge I think, should let us see what our boy Sean Frazier can do locally:
"Mangus said the “sublicensing part” of the agreement is “noteworthy. We can go to regional carriers and sell programming. It runs through ESPN, and we’ve shown great flexibility and relationships with other carriers.”

I would have to assume our new media partner had full knowledge of this ESPN deal before we signed. This likely removes football games from being on NIUTube.

RE: MAC TV Deal
How long do those games stay on ESPN3, I mean if I want to replay the game later? I know they used to be out there for a year, but last year's games are long gone. That's the one thing I liked about ESPN3, we had a bunch of games (and other MAC games) I could watch months later.
A little disappointed we didn't get $1 million, since the contract goes out so far.

Smart TV's and Smart Bluerays will be in everyone's home before long. This makes the Cable/internet divide less noticeable.
TV is evolving, becoming more interactive. AmazonPrime, NetFliz and Hulu are producing new original shows. So in my mind having all football games on ESPN3 is a great thing for the conference.
Even now, without a Smart TV or Smart Bluray Player, you can buy a streaming stick or box for $40-$90 and watch all the ESPN3 games on your TV. That's a one-time expense; there are no monthly charges for WatchESPN. And, the quality is very good, close to HD.
The cable/internet divide is pretty much gone now.
But you still have to have a certain carrier though, correct? I get ESPN3 because I have Comcast. Otherwise I can't watch it.

Which is fine, IMO. The bandwidth ESPN can provide to stream on ESPN3 is better than what NIUTube can do. Would love to see time bought on a local station to broadcast the ESPN feed as well.

Yes I think that will work out much better...it will actually give us a better opportunity to have more than one game on CSN-C I think.
Now we can have ESPN run the production and just pay for the airtime on CSN instead of the airtime, the talent and production.

RE: MAC TV Deal
I don't love the midweek games, but I get it (and the MAC isn't going after me, I'm already a fan. They want new fans.).
TV seems like the present and future of sports. Attendance in general is way down (or, in the case of the MAC as a whole, hasn't been high in...ever?) so I understand maximizing exposure and revenue but it does suck for those that want to actually go to the games.

RE: MAC TV Deal
More deets on the new deal:
http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/...cart_river
"It is understood, as the deal plays out, the ability to get regional providers (such as Time Warner Cable, STO) to broadcast games will play a big part in that exposure."
"There is a self-production component to this," Steinbrecher said. "Within four years all men's basketball games will be shown on an ESPN platform.''
"ESPN and the MAC are clearly banking on technology being able to integrate both TV and the internet into one, so ESPN3"
"We are using football to drive basketball. For this year, at least, there will be a Friday night ESPN TV component during the conference season. "

That is totally wrong. These NIU games from 2013 are still available on WatchESPN/ESPN3: Akron, CMU, UMass, Ball State, Toledo, WMU, MACC and the Poinsettia Bowl. You can even still watch a replay of the 2013 Discover Orange Bowl.

I must be looking in the wrong place. Before, all I did was pull up the website, select "football" and I found all the old games. The last time I did that, there weren't any.

Maybe you need face your computer towards the East, position your head to face up to the cloud, and breathe in the ethernet for it to work. Sure is a heck of a lot more fun than just turning on your TV and DVR!
