MAC Preview: NIU
A quote I have not seen before:
"Offensive football is really easy," Carey simplified. "Do what your quarterback can do. And that's what we will do. No matter what we look like, it doesn't matter. We have a lot of weapons coming back."

"One of the most talented units on the defensive side of the ball, if not the deepest, is linebacker. NIU has 12 linebackers on the roster and everyone on the two-deep has playing experience."
This seems like a huge recruiting screw up...we have 12 LBs, but barely any DL

It's a hell of a lot easier to recruit LBs than DL, especially in the MAC.

Absolutely. Plus, LBers can convert to other positions based on whether they get bigger or not, or even to the offensive side if they appear to be a bust as e
defensive guys (See: Stingily, Cameron)
Pure finished-product D-linemen end up in the SEC. In the MAC, you either get overachievers like Nabal Jefferson, diamonds-in-the-rough like Alan Baxter, converted players like Quince Holman, guys with an injury knock like Larry English, or guys with character issues like Frank Boenzi.
You're destined to have a lot of washouts on both the O-line & D-line in college because there's so much more projection involved there. And, D-linemen are much less numerous (especially in this part of the country) than O-linemen.

Look at how many Linebackers in HS became DE (Meehan for one) and Safeties became linebackers(Lemon). NIU will never get the 6'4" 245 lb outside linebacker with 4.5 speed. Those go to the P5 schools

...it won't seem like a mistake when NIU breaks out the 2-6 or 1-7 or 0-8 defense.
