RE: California's drought
...And God Created California!

In the Beginning

God was missing for six days. Eventually, Michael the archangel found him, resting on the seventh day. He inquired of God. "Where have you been?"

God sighed a deep sigh of satisfaction and proudly pointed downwards through the clouds, "Look, Michael. Look what I've made."

Archangel Michael looked puzzled and said, "What is it?"

"It's a planet," replied God, "and I've put Life on it. I'm going to call it Earth and it's going to be a great place of balance." "Balance?" Inquired Michael, still confused.

God explained, pointing to different parts of earth. "For example, northern Europe will be a place of great opportunity and wealth while southern Europe is going to be poor. Over there I've placed a continent of white people and over there is a continent of black people," God continued pointing to different countries. "This one will be extremely hot and while this one will be very cold and covered in ice." The Archangel, impressed by God's work, then pointed to a land mass and said "What's that one?"

"Ah," said God. "That's California the most glorious place on earth. There are beautiful beaches, deserts, streams, hills, and forests. The people from California are going to be handsome, modest, intelligent and humorous and they are going to be found traveling the world. They will be extremely sociable, hardworking and high achieving, and they will be known throughout the world as diplomats and carriers of peace."

Michael gasped in wonder and admiration but then proclaimed, "What about balance, God? You said there would be balance!!!"

God replied wisely, "Wait until you see the idiots I put in Sacramento."

Answer number one: Corn ethanol subsidy.
Answer number two: Fruits and vegetables don't adapt to the midwest as well as you may think.

It's more #2 than #1 but they both play a factor. We have pretty short growing seasons here...

There are plenty of areas in NC/SC/GA and other areas of the south that could grow vegetables. They don't though because growing corn, soy, and wheat are far too profitable because of the subsidies.

Drought/flood destroy your corn? No problem, you're covered. Drought/flood destroy your tomatoes? You're SOL.

Because of the way the winds blow you still ahve far shorter goring seasons in GA than you do in Cali... BTW Georgia grows more Cotton and Peanuts than Corn. SC and NC also grow more Cotton than anything else.

Except for the nursery and floriculture industry.

And timber is actually our most valuable cash crop. I know a number of both cattlemen and farmers in my lifetime who turned their property into tree farms because it was so hard to make a living farming these days.

We could turn west Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California ,Nevada ,and Utah into lush farm land if we could only get water desalination plants going.

There is no logical reason behind it.

This is one curious aspect of our endangered species protocol. There are ways to help many endangered species become un-endangered again. But those are almost universally opposed by EPA and the endangered species lobby. They don't want to help the species survive. They just want another tool to manipulate and screw people.

What cities did you visit?

I mostly stayed in Oakland/Berkeley with my brother, but we went down to Monterey for the weekend and we stayed in Salinas. So we drove through quite a few large farms. That 80 pct quote was from my brother - I was just taking his word on it.

The Bay Area is doing its best to conserve water. Very few houses out there have lavish yards. It's actually neat to see the variety of plants and vegetables/fruits people can grow in their yards. They also went nuts over a rare summer rain event - they got all of a tenth of an inch and were dancing in the streets.

You were a weekend early in Monterey. This weekend is the Concourse de Elegance (sp?) and the roads are filled with classic and high end cars. It is pretty cool to be sitting at a stop light in line behind 7 Lamborghini's while 10 Ferrari's pass you going the other direction.

Quote:In May 2007, a Federal District Court Judge ruled that increased amounts of water had to be re-allocated towards protecting the Delta smelt – a three-inch fish on the Endangered Species List.
Because of this ruling, in 2009 and 2010 more than 300 billion gallons (or 1 million acre-feet) of water were diverted away from farmers in the Central Valley and into the San Francisco Bay – eventually going out into the Pacific Ocean.
Congressional Report
And this diversion continues today.
The Republican House passed a bill to overturn the water wasting but Harry Reid, under orders from Tom Steyer and with a firm grasp around his ankles, has refused to allow it to come to a vote.
House Bill

Like it or not, we need a massive conversion to re-use of sewer effluent or we are going to have a national water crisis of a scale to make our energy woes look minuscule by comparison. California is just the tip of the iceberg. ETA: Just to clarify, we are going to have the problem regardless. Re-cycling water buys us time and makes the peak less ominous, but it's going to take that--and more--ultimately.

I often marvel at the hypocrisy of all these Hollywood stars who run their mouths about protecting the environment but use 20,000-30,000 gallons a month to keep their heavily landscaped yards beautiful--in the middle of a desert. Every single drop of irrigation water for non-food-producing plants needs to be recycled wastewater effluent. That's a start, then go from there.

We have never had a water crisis here in the Mid-Atlantic. Even in our biggest drought (I don't know around 2008ish), there was no shortage.
Charlotte and Atlanta have had some pretty severe droughts. Not to the degree of CA, but I remember seeing Atlanta's primary reservoir probably 50% below normal many years back. Raleigh's too. in Charlotte, the docks on the lakes that provide that area with water were so far from the water that people would have been lowering their boats into parched earth (not even mud).

Fortunately, we've had more than our fair share of water the last two summers and the farmers have had record crops.

As these areas continue to grow quickly, water will eventually become an issue unless there is a creation of new reservoirs to capture more water.

I remember Allatoona Lake at historic lows during one period in the late 80's and early 90's.

UMemphis is correct. Memphis and the surrounding metro area has some of the best drinking water in the USA. Probably on this planet. And LOTS of it. We'll give ample consideration to selling some to perhaps Texas....if they vote us into the Big XII.

It would take more than just desalinization plants. You'd have to move the water inland from the shore, and that's a long way uphill, and moving water a long way uphill gets expensive fast. Not to mention that desalinization itself is expensive. So you'd have a very difficult time making the economics work.

We are going to have to move water anyways. Even if we start using snowmelt more effectively. We could build a system of saltwater lakes through out the southwest and let evaporation help us.
