Just can't wrap my mind around this terrible tragedy. When my children were young, we would go to see his movies for kids like Hook, Jumanji and Flubber. He brought us so many laughs together. Such a sad night.

Yep, that's one of the movies I really associate with Williams. It wasn't one of his more popular ones, but that was a powerful movie.

Just goes to show that fame and fortune don't often equate to "happy". It really is just too bad, such a gifted man. I've often wondered why it seems as though so many people gifted in the theatrical world also have issues with depression and addiction......who knows?

and yes, Bevo - we had another less famous person serving our country get killed in Afganistan - a tragedy as well.

Hollywood fame has a tendency to overshadow things that happen in everyday life. Just the world we live in.

Most of them do their best work when they are high and the use eventually leads to abuse and mental illness. Look at Chris Farley. Can't get much funnier than a coked up Chris Farley, but how funny would he have been without the impression he just downed a 12 pack of Red Bull?

RE: OT Robin Williams found dead
When I first saw the headline on Williams, I had assumed an accidental drug overdose.

Not that one type of death is necessarily "better" than others, but suicide stings a lot more. It's deliberate. It illustrates that the weeks leading up to it were torment.

And it's true that the cult of celebrity pushes people like Williams in the sympathy spotlight while other not-so-famous people get little attention. But like Crebman said, it's just the world we live in and a natural psychological reaction. People the world over have "invited" Williams into their living rooms via TV and movies since the 80s, and even if you never met the man, it breeds some semblance of familiarity.

He spoke often about the dark side of comedians, most of who he claimed suffered from some emotional illness and whose routines were simply an extension of such illnesses albeit completely turned inside out. They are all tortured souls apparently.

So, apparently Shepard Smith said some questionable things about Williams at the end of his show on Fox.

Smith called Williams a coward.

IIRC isn't Smith a Democrat?

Shame on Smith then. He's the reason why that part of my TV watching does not include FOX during that hour.

Why is his death any less or more important than anyone else's?

It really isn't except for the fact that most everyone knows who he is be it from TV, movies or stand up comedy routines. Most everyone else that off's themselves......not so much.

Smith makes a good point, he is a coward. I actually liked Williams a week ago, despite that he was a flaming leftist. Now he is diminished to POS status.

Well, despite medical advances, suicide deaths have been on the rise for almost 20 years. Weather it is the local kid that kills himself over "bullying" or someone like Robin Williams, the media has been celebrating these cowards for too long, almost guaranteeing that someone who commits suicide will get at least a week's worth of end to end coverage fame by offing themselves. Sounds like an incentive... they are doing a disservice. I don't like Shepard Smith, but he is spot on with this one.

As the Country has outlawed in some cases and more generally moved away from God, hopelessness has taken over.
