(08-31-2014 09:37 PM)Tribal Wrote:  On the play when Bo was injured, #9 clearly targeted Bo's head and the announcers said as much. Then you have #98 standing over Bo chirping at him when the guy didn't even make the play. Before any of that, the guy who was held jumped across the neutral zone; I would have liked Jerry to have grabbed him then. By the way, Steve threw a beautiful ball while in the air and Mikal had a nice block. Feel terrible for Bo.

Hunter the Punter crushed the ball 58 yards. Great kick.

On VT's first possession, I thought we handled the hurry-up offense very well as far as getting in position. Nice batted ball by Gryder - actually, he really looked good this drive. Tech's QB was sharp and Receivers blocked well on the screens and sweeps. BS call on Bopp putting his helmet back on. Miscommunication on the TD pass after our DL put pressure on Brewer.

Our second possession, what can you say, great wildcat run by Mikal and if you watch it in slo-mo, you'll see a hell of a block by Chris Durant to open the hole. Tech got away with an obvious PI on Reeves. Cluley looked solid. Carpenter nailed a nice kick.

Booming KO by Carpenter followed by Chris Donald's tip and Green's INT. Momentum at this point swung our way and credit our coaches for stepping on VT's throat the first offensive play. I don't think I'm overstating this by saying Cluley's 43 pass to McBride was the best pass I've seen a Tribe player make since the Nova playoff game in 2009. He led Tre perfectly down the sideline. No jump balls. No Receiver comebacks. Perfect spiral 50 yards in the air. Goes without saying but Cluley was able to step into his throw because our OL and K. McBride provided him a massive pocket. Unfortunately, two FGs after two 40+ yard plays isn't enough to beat a good FBS team. That said, Cluley showed a lot of maturity, great decision-making, and impressive arm strength in throwing the 3rd down pass away while three 300 lb DLs were in his face.

Our D stood tall again forcing a Tech punt and we got the ball to their 39 yard line. Momentum is in the Tribe's favor and we're looking good. Then Cluley gets nailed by an enormous MLB running at 20mph and that's that. Luckily our only fast player left within 20 yards of the line of scrimmage was able to catch the VT player before he could score. Defense, again, held their own. While some criticized Green for not batting the TD ball down, I suggest his play-maker attitude/abilities are invaluable and I'm okay with him going for the pick. Those attributes are what allowed him to intercept a ball and recover a fumble in this game and remember he led the Tribe last season in INTs. Either way, it was a heck of a catch by Tech's 6'6 Receiver over the back of 6'0 Airek.

T. McBride had a nice 25 yard KO return to our 35. I think the two straight running plays was too conservative and the fumbled snap was a brain fart. Those little things. Another booming punt (59 yards) and great coverage. Our D held VT to a FG and it seemed we were still in it...not a men against boys situation at all. And that's the half.

In my view this looked more like a 17-10 half, tied at 10 if Cluley didn't get his chest caved in on the sack-fumble. We all know the 2nd half left a lot to be desired but we tend to fade in the 2nd half against FBS schools. As Rocco aptly wrote, Cluley didn't look the same after that hit and our limited roster size wore down.

What I take away from this game, as I and several of you have stated, is we won't see anyone as fast or physical as VT for the remainder of the season. Not Villanova. Not anyone. Cluley is a legit QB and he's going to be fine once our OL matches up against the front seven of FCS teams and can provide him the protection he deserves. Gotta keep him healthy. Our running game is on point and our defense is going to be excellent. Our special teams play could very well be the best in the CAA if not the FCS. When is the last time that was possible? We have a returning CAA Special Teams POY, an NFL-caliber punter, and Carpenter looks sharp.

So go ahead, tell me how I'm looking at this through Green & Vegas Gold glasses.

On to Hampton...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is reassuring to hear the positive comments on this Board, especially, Re: Cluely - now, we need to keep him from getting injured

Hampton is a big test, I don't think they will be a pushover and they did play pretty well VS ODU

Our O-Line was totally outclassed by VT, which surprised me because of all the pre-season hype published about the strength of the O-Line - the Hampton game will be a big opportunity for the O-Line to prove itself

RE: VT Game Day
I think the OL is too big of a sweep. I believe the left side did an OK job. It seemed to me that most of the penetration was coming on the right side. Comments?

RE: VT Game Day
I agree with 65. There was a lot of penetration from the right side interior.

Lets also remember that not only was their D-Line bigger, faster, and more experienced (I think some of the Tribe Athletics size listings for our players may be a BIT exaggerated)...

But our starting O-Line included 4 starters and new positions, and we lost our best blocking TE - by a long shot - on the second play from scrimmage.

RE: VT Game Day
We slip to #21 in the TSN poll. Not shocking, especially since FCS rankings this early mean even less than those at the FBS level. With so many teams playing an FBS school it's hard to gauge where people really are.

RE: VT Game Day
It was the speed (and technique) of their DL. They got by our guys really quickly. I thought the run blocking was better.

RE: VT Game Day
You can medically redshirt if you compete in less than a certain number of the season...I believe it is 25%. Depends on if he wants to stick around for another year, I sure hope he does.

Tribe was down 17-6 at the half at VT and it could have been closer. VT is drumming #8 Ohio State at their place tonight 21-7 at the half.
