Power Five coaches polled on games
http://espn.go.com/college-football/stor...-schedules
Mississippi State's Dan Mullen, who also favored it, said if the schools played only Power Five opponents, they would need more scholarship players and expanded eligibility.
If the P5 do this they should start their own division. They would have to because non-P5 schools will have little reason to allow this. I suppose a larger contribution to G5 (cough, bribe, cough) could appease some. But any increase in scholarship limits for the P5 would be a deal killer for many. It would have a trickle-down affect as far a quality atheetes in concerned...

Some of the lower end P5 teams would be in more over their head than some of the non-P5 schools now.

They won't be happy until they've gutted, fricasseed, eaten and pooped the golden goose.

I'd imagine that as blazerman said the lower end P5 will end up being booted out to G5 if they're not able to step it up leading to a leaner more exclusive regional P5 club that can do all it wants to

I wonder how soon this will effect NCAA basketball? We already have had the term BCS conferences be applied to basketball even though there is not the first bowl game in basketball.
But how much longer before teams that are not in the Power 5 are excluded from division 1 basketball?

This was just an non-scientific poll of coaches, not officially policy.
No need to get all worked up yet over something that didn't even have a majority concensus.

I still say the tipping point of all of this will be the desire by the P5 to increase scholarship limits under the guise of giving more students an opportunity. That would have a massive negative affect on G5 and smaller conferences as it trickles down. Not getting this would lead to a split bringing some G5 teams with them. I don't think P5 can't survive long-term playing only a P5 schedule with only 64 other teams to choose from as a 7-5 champion, 5-7 bowl teams, only 6 home games, and every team lining up to play P5's own canon fodder like Kansas, Kentucky, and Rutgers grows "old" on fans, sponsors, and the networks.

The P-5 schools are more likely to make a move to play a longer season so they can have more high income "always at home" games -- so I would expect a move to 13, 14 or even perhaps eventually 15 regular season games to fatten their Athletic Department wallets. Remember - It was not that long ago that the regular season was 10, then 11 and now 12 games, so the pattern is already there. Low cost games against less challenging opponents that can be sold at regular ticket prices on season ticket grouping increase income and fatten W-L records - increased scholarships increase costs.
As it already exists, the operating system is really the "University of the Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa" vs the "University of the War Eagle in Auburn", two Athletic departments that each spends about $200,000 per athlete annually while the academic school that is attached to them must increase tuition over the past 5 years by over 40% just to make ends meet while spending less than $13,000 per student annually. This is not just in Alabama but is a common thread across the top programs in the P5 world. The median athletic program in the SEC in 2010 spent over $165,000 per athlete to be #1 among conferences with the Big 12 coming in second at $35,000 per athlete less.
