Army to force out 550 majors; some in Afghanistan
This after 1200 Captains are being forced out. Obama and his socialist, Muslim loving administration is out to destroy the ability of America to be strong militarily. He wants almost 4 billion dollars to take care of illegal aliens, but not for the men that have dedicated themselves to our military and our defense of country. What a great President...

Quote: Gen. John Campbell, the vice chief of the Army, acknowledged Friday that telling troops in a war zone that they're out of a job is a difficult task. But he said some of the soldiers could join the National Guard or the Army Reserve.

The decision to cut Army majors comes on the heels of a move to slash nearly 1,200 captains from the ranks. Army leaders were criticized at the time for giving 48 of them the bad news while they were deployed to Afghanistan.

The Army declined to say how many majors will be notified while they are at the battlefront.

"The ones that are deployed are certainly the hardest," Campbell told reporters. "What we try to do there is, working through the chain of command, minimize the impact to that unit and then maximize the time to provide to that officer to come back and do the proper transition, to take care of himself or herself, and the family."

Campbell said it's difficult to avoid cutting deployed soldiers because of the timing schedules.

All the soldiers being forced to leave have probably already been given a heads-up that they were at risk of the job cut and will meet with a senior officer, according to the Army.

Those who are cut have nine months to leave the Army. And the soldiers who are deployed, including those in Afghanistan, will generally have about a month to move out of that job and go home to begin to transition out of the service.

The cuts have been difficult for many young officers, particularly captains, who tend not to have enough years in service to retire.

To make the cuts, the Army looked at about 8,500 majors who joined the service between 1999 and 2003. Some may have about 15 years of service, depending on all factors that go into credit for years of service, and might be able to retire, but many won't have enough time in the job, Campbell said

RE: Army to force out 550 majors; some in Afghanistan
Pentagon Official: The Facts Are In, And Obama’s Policy Is A Direct Danger To The United States

The report is in, and the review of the president’s foreign policy is clear: If there is not an immediate course-reversal, the United States is in serious danger.

In 2013, the United States Institute for Peace, “a congressionally-created, independent, nonpartisan institution whose mission is to prevent, mitigate, and resolve violent conflicts around the world,” was asked to assist the National Defense Panel with reviewing the Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR). The National Defense Panel is a congressional-mandated bipartisan commission that’s co-chairs were appointed by Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel.

On July 31, the National Defense Panel released its long-awaited report on the effects of the QDR and delivered its findings to Congress. The panel pulled no punches — its findings were a scathing indictment of Obama’s foreign policy, national security policy, and defense policy. The panel found that president Barack Obama’s QDR, military force reductions, and trillion-dollar defense budget cuts are dangerous — and will leave the country in a position where it is unable to respond to threats to our nation’s security. This, the panel concluded, must be reversed as soon as possible.

He already purged the military of conservative Generals, I'm guessing if you were to review the political affiliation of the Captains dismissed and the Majors about to be, I'd bet they are overwhelmingly Republican.

The fact we spend over 700 billion just to "keep the monsters away" is ridiculous. Thats more than the next 10 countries combined. It's time to cut the military budget, and bring our troops home. After we've phased out many career military into private/public sector jobs, we can secure the border, and America will still be just as safe.

Cut foreign aid to third world nations, and warring countries like Israel...use that money on the debt and social programs that actually help Americans such as EBT/SNAP, Section 8, Unemployment Insurance, etc

The first link is an interactive map showing which country got how much of our money. The second it the website it came from.

We spent more than 700 billion on ONE bailout. And you're complaining about spending that much on our defense? Second, the next ten countries don't have the same enemies that seek our obliteration. Thirdly, out of the 1200 captains that were cut, 1152 were ALREADY HOME. So you want us to bring the remaining home, and then fire them? Then you want to take pay from our military servicemembers and just give it to social programs? Your comments defy logic and are just wholly questionable.

Exactly...a one time thing isn't great, but to save the economy, OK.

That 700 billion for the military is YEARLY...

718 in 2011, 729 in 2012, 716 in 2013.

I fully agree that we spend way too much on defense...much of it simply waste and redundancies. No one is going to roll tanks across the border.. we are geographically blessed against invasion. A prudent reduction in defense spending and proper use of the funding to address actual threats would be appropriate. I also support elimination of ALL foreign aid that is not specifically humanitarian in nature.

I reject however that any savings from such a reduction should be spent on income redistribution schemes. It should be returned to the citizens that have been paying the bills in the form of tax cuts.

I would say use the savings like 70% towards the debt, 20% to social programs, 10% to infrastructure...or something like that :-)

These cuts have to be great for the cadets in our military academies who have to be wondering if their career are pre-destined to be cut short. But the bigger question is, when do we start cutting Commander-in-Chiefs?

Those guys are the cream of the crop, and will probably not have to worry about that.

Its not like they randomly picked 550 majors to boot, as the last paragraph shows.

This is normal, we were fighting two wars, and needed as many enlisted and officers as we could get. Not that were scaling now to a peace time military, its now time to reduce the size of the military.

The VA is taking care of that.

When the sh#t hits the fan and Americans are being attacked, it will be the libs that run and hide expecting those that aren't yellow cowards like them in our military to protect them from themselves. After they reduce and gut the military it will be their own demise they have wrought.

Instead of engaging in hyperbole and gang warfare we should be using some fcking common sense in regard to defense spending and entitlements. Both need major overhauls and are simply not sustainable at their current levels. Cuts are going to have to come from somewhere. This is where the money is at. Of course...we can just continue the nonsense and kick the can on down the road for the yet born to deal with.

I'm sorry, that made me laugh. I've known many a mental lightweight in my class and I'm sure that hasn't changed.

As UofMemphis mentioned, $700 Billion is way too much to spend on our military and such bloat leads the US to funding BS projects like the JSF, DDX, LCS and more M1A2 tanks. A constrained budget would force the military to asked rational questions about current and future engagement philosophies.

That being said, cutting the military will in no way balance the budget, since whatever savings are realized will be funneled into SS ($808 Billion), Medicare and Medicaid ($851 Billion). Cutting the military was just an easy, painless step. Seeing as how we need to cut a trillion dollars out of Federal Spending, I'm looking forward to see if anyone has the stones to make the necessary changes to the other funding hogs.
