My wife wants to eventually move to the NW corner around Pickens/Clemson/ Walhalla/Seneca, but IMO the sprawl from Greenville and Anderson will eventually end up there because of the lakes.

Personally, I want to get as far out of "town" as possible. I've been looking at land more in the McCormick/Edgefield/Saluda the Orangeburg/Barnwell/Bamberg/Walterboro and the Chesterfield/Darlington/Bishopville areas.

I want to make having to go to Walmart a trip you plan, and I want to get back to doing a little farming, have enough woodlands to enjoy, and a watersourse big enough for fishing. My biggest problem has been finding a large enough tract of land for what I want to do that isn't a former timber company land so it's now pretty much a loblolly pine monoculture, has been cleared bare for horse pasture, or has any water other than a trickle stream.

Yeah, there is a world of difference between Greenville and Spartanburg.

Corridor. Not necessarily right on the dang thing. San Diego to LA to Malibu to Santa Barbara up PCH to Monterey ... just uh ... skip SFO ... PCH back to I-5 at Grants Pass and follow it through Eugene ... uhh ... skip Portland ... on up to Seattle and Vancouver. It would be great if other people and government hadn't ruined it. Which is why my caveat is if you can hide your assets out of state.

I'd take the Greenville NC over the SC one any day. No Pirates in SC.

What exactly is attractive about living in a Megalopolis? Doesn't everyone want to get away from the sprawl?

That is its problem. You just don't go through or by it. When you go there?..it is for a purpose. It is however growing fast despite this problem.

That isn't a problem, that is a blessing.

Biggest issues I have with it is that the planning dept sucks and the downtown is pretty much a joke. Fix those 2 things and Greenville would be a much better place to live and might draw some more business. The last thing Greenville needs is more strip mall, cookie cutter crap popping up on Greenville Blvd / Charles area. That crap has cluttered up that area so bad there's no reason 5:00 traffic should be that bad in a town under 100K. It seems like everything modern is crammed into one area and it's just a hodge podge to me.

FWIW, I haven't been there in 4 years so maybe a lot has changed. But it seems that everytime I read a thread about something new there it's just another chain popping up in that same area.

I'd be against the Barnwell area. Too much nuclear waste for my taste. If you intend to farm you either need to chose inland from the coast 20-40 miles or be in the upstate unless you like crappy harvests. They aren't called Sandlappers for nothin'. (This means the greater Florence area you're lookin' at in the Corridor of Shame is also unsuitable.) If you live in SC it had better be in the I-85 corridor or the Grand Strand. The middle is no (intelligent) man's land.

Based on your own descriptions I'd recommend Chesnee, Pauline, Chester, Ware Shoals, Walhalla, Madison, Westminster.

You're too close to the Potomac probably. The South starts at Richmond.

Pitt County pretty much has zero to offer except being close to the OBX and Parker's BBQ in Wilson. Bath, Belhaven, little towns like Aurora are cool but that is it.

Don't get me wrong, I like Eastern NC because it never changes.

Norfolk is way more Yankee than South. Unless you're south of Elizabeth City.

Y'all are speaking Chinese. The only place I know in those areas is Charleston SC and Savannah Georgia and we loved the area, except for the no-seeums. I must have seemed like a Mexican dinner to them because they were eating me up. My wife didn't even get a bite, I wish I knew why.

Huh? Unless you are basing that strictly on the naval Base bringing in all types to the area.

GTS, I assume you live in ATL at some time. Atlanta is nothing but Yanks!!

Well, you don't know the southeast region very well.

Because of the navy. The local population is more Southern than Richmond and I am not a transplant.

Not at all, but I would love to. If I could get myself separated from UTEP sports and the family I would move there. Especially near the ocean. Maybe if I buy an RV I could stay there a while.

I base it on a number of things from voting patterns to sporting team allegiances and more. The Atlanta core is highly transient. It has more turnover than a Reggie Ball led offense.

Whoa. Talk of I-85 with no mention of Henderson, NC? We're coming along. Only 3 arsons last year.
