RE: W&M Medical School - EVMS merger
Now with the official announcement this weekend of the VA Tech Carillon School of Medicine, does an EVMS decision become a little more critical? If not us, someone else will grab the last state corner of this market.

Its a natural fit and I wish Reveley would have moved on it before stepping down. Our new president comes from smaller liberal arts schools and is probably less inclined to see the need to absorb the medical school. Prove me wrong.

I also wished Reveley laid a foundation for the merger before he stepped down since he has a solid VA connection. Not complaining as he did so much for the college.

Here's hoping this isn't a Davis Y Paschall to Tom Graves transfer of power and priorities with regard to actions that have been set-up and skids greased...

Anyone that states the prestige of EVMS not high enough to warrant WMs involvement should take this announcement as evidence that it doesnt matter. Carillion/Edward Via whatever had a much worse reputation, yet suddenly they vault much closer in perceived quality with major university backing.

Also, they plan to base the school in Roanoke, not Blacksburg, a similar 45 min drive between Burg and Norfolk.

I've only heard a little talk of this, but from what I understand the College is in a bit of a fix financially with all of the new construction, super-high tuition, etc. Is it financially feasible for us to merge with EVMS?

RE: W&M Medical School - EVMS merger
there was a flurry of press a couple years ago (which made it sound like it was going to happen) and then it seemed to all go away (which made me think it wasn't going to happen).

And I still haven't really heard any updates.

I think that quality would matter less to VT than to us. They can dump a bunch of money into a med school that matches up with them geographically, where we don't have that option.

Michigan State has two medical schools, Human Medicine (MD) and Osteopathic Medicine (DO). Human Medicine has two campuses, one in East Lansing and one in Grand Rapids. Osteopathic has a campus in East Lansing and is scouting the Detroit area for a location for a second campus.

I have no idea if it's accurate or wildly off the mark, but I just ran across this discussion of the EVMS med school situation:

IMO this would be a massive lost opportunity. Im hoping that somehow Rowe hears of this and gets the BOV to take another look. Im sure Northam et al will be on board...he went to EVMS and his son to WM. We have a billion dollar endowment. We can afford to invest in this, which should actually help our endowment in the long run. EVMS has grown significantly in the last decade, both figuratively in terms of quality as well as literally, with regard to new facilities. They appear on good financial standing after new arrangements with the state and Sentara. A "second look" announcement could be a quick and easy diversion from everything else going on as well.

RE: W&M Medical School - EVMS merger
Medical School Education is terribly expensive and not a money maker. Teaching hospitals are even worse with most running operating deficits. The biggest leadership mistakes WM ever made were letting VCU and ODU spit off and become stand alone institutions. We not compete with those schools for State Funding rather than find ourself the "crown jewel" of a system of 3 campus' with 50K students. We are wise to stay away from a conversation about adding a medical school to WM.

Of course you dont make money off of the students. The money is made in scientific grants and patents as well as by the many alumni with high-incomes who can then donate back to the school.Teaching hospitals are no longer typically owned by the medical schools either, but instead have been sold off to corporate chains, who usually invest in the school and pay many of the salaries of the staff and physicians. Sentara already owns the main teaching hospital of EVMS. If medical schools are such dead weight, why does every major university in the US have one? Are we more similar to Bucknell or Duke, JMU or UVA? Talk about losing out on being a crown jewel...we are letting one of the ONLY ways "up" slip away.

I totally agree. I doubt our leadership is bold enough to make a decision of this magnitude. I hope they prove me wrong.

So many pre-med students at W&M. Experience just isn't the same without a hospital at or near the school. Not sure EVMS is the right situation, but having a medical school would be a huge step up for us.

Not hard to find partnerships with local hospitals to bring them into a consortium for pre-med exposure (Sentara williamsburg, Riverside Williamsburg etc). Regardless, pre-med requirements for true clinical time is essentially zero. It is only recommended that you have observation time so that you know what youre getting into. It does not make you a more competitive applicant per se. Again, remember the Cornell example. Now VA Tech has a similar setup. Their medical schools are nowhere near the main campus. Lastly, 45 minutes drive to EVMS is NOT FAR!!!

I didn't read that as Tribe32 saying EVMS was far. I read it as saying having no hospital near the school wasn't great for all our pre-meds, with the implication that EVMS would be a positive change.
