NMSU to get $85 Million Privatly Funded Medical School on Campus
Quote:The $85 million, private osteopathic medical school to be built on the campus of New Mexico State University is being funded by Santa Fe real estate and mining developer Dan Burrell and his family, who over the course of 60 years will make a $30 million donation to the NMSU Foundation.

Construction of the 80,000-square-foot Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine is expected to begin in February 2015, and the school will open its doors in September 2016, Burrell and NMSU President Garrey Carruthers said. The for-profit facility will be built on seven acres in NMSU’s Arrowhead Center that Burrell’s company, Burrell Education Enterprises, will lease from the school for $268,329 a year.

BCOM receives pre-accreditation from the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation

Quote:The Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation, also known as COCA, has awarded pre-accreditation to the Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine at New Mexico State University. COCA voted in favor of BCOM’s application and awarded pre-accreditation status during a Dec. 6 meeting in Chicago.

During the meeting, a delegation from BCOM and NMSU, along with community members, health care leaders and elected officials from New Mexico, El Paso and Chihuahua, Mexico, presented their case as to why BCOM should be awarded pre-accreditation status.

“Receiving pre-accreditation is a highly significant milestone for BCOM as it validates the past two years of our work,” BCOM President Dan Burrell said. “I give enormous credit to the team members and partners who have collaborated to get this project to a point of feasibility. I am excited about the next phase of BCOM’s development and look forward to a groundbreaking event early next year.”
