Going by this, it looks like the music center was possible in 3 locations - watauga, back off zach curlin behind the library, and over between poplar & central off the central lot. Basically choosing 3 variations - "Go West," "Optimize the Core," or "Activate the North/South Corridor."
I guess with this new music building location & the rec center, they're opting to go with 'activate the north/south corridor' as opposed to creating the big western entrance. Looks like the alumni center will move in front of where the new music building will be, but the visitor center will face Highland with the "Greek village" right behind it where the houses currently are.
I don't like that this option loses a "formal" entrance to the university.

RE: New $40 million music building planned at University of Memphis
Does the school provide classes/degrees/advanced instruction on music and recording production? It would be great for the local music industry to keep talented producers and writers here with the musicians to preserve/grow that sector.

There is a Music Business degree with two concentrations available - music business & recording technology.

The university used to have its own record label - high water records. Don't know if that's just something that's gone dormant and could be dusted back off and used again or not

dr Evans produced most of those records. He went to the ms hill country and recorded artists like rl burnside and junior kimbrough. He was also responsible for getting hill country blues recognized as distinctive from delta blues.
You could argue he was responsible for a lot of those artists eventually getting famous which indirectly led to fat possum records and later recordings by modern artists like John spencer and the black keys.
But to answer your question, high water and its catalogue were acquired by another record company.
I think you can still get some of their albums. One I've still got is "rl burnside and the sound machine groove" - a live album recorded at the original center for southern folklore - very simple recording but a cool record.
This city really does need a couple of music archivists.

With the musical heritage of Memphis, the University of Memphis should have the best music facilities and the best freakin marching band in the land.

Or at least play music associated with that heritage instead of the same songs & arrangements 100 other marching bands are playing

What they SHOULD have is complete marching band facilities built into an on-campus stadium.
The football team trains and practices off-campus. Integrating marching band facilities with an on-campus stadium would allow the band to use the facilities on a regular basis. We could have the best equipped marching band facility in the nation for a few million dollars on top of the OCS cost.
If we had that, we could attract students and faculty from all over the country. Our marching band would become one of the best in the nation in literally a few short years.
An instant national standing is there for the taking, but I forgot. The Liberty Bowl is such a great deal for us.
If only our leadership had the tiniest amount of vision.

RE: New $40 million music building planned at University of Memphis
Marching Band is not highly regarded by much of the university-level music education establishment. Separating from the music school, not cutting it off, but simply providing a little buffer, could be good for both sides.
