RE: World Cup Thread
I love it, I watch our local team here as well as the Premier league. This is just gravy for me. Wished I had played it more, or came along at a time when it was more mainstream. Didn't start until I was 14. Been hooked ever since.

DB, have you seen any of the stuff about Detroit City FC? Went to one of their matches a few weeks ago, it's like being a Lunatic all over again, without getting yelled at for language.

RE: World Cup Thread
I was lucky to grow up playing a number of sports including soccer. My high school did not have soccer so I could play football in the call and soccer in the summer.

Soccer is a tough sport...the physical mental part of the game takes its toll. Having the played the sport at a fairly high level (played against the likes of the Aurora Kickers, Grun Weiss, and Schwaben all out of Chicago) can really appreciate when these players can do and make it look easy. Great memories of beating the crap out of each other during weekend tournament that going to their "Summerfest" on Saturday night and drinking together. Summer soccer kept me in great shape for football, even when I was in college and play football at WMU.

USA all the way.....then my team is Die Mannschaft! Both my parents are from Germany. I love the World Cup!

Ghana ties it late then a U.S. sub scores to put us back in the lead.

RE: World Cup Thread
What an ugly win, but it's 3 badly needed points in the Death Group. We had better improve or Germany puts big crooked numbers up on us.

I'm convinced anyone who rags on soccer for being boring has never watched it. Luckily it seems to be all old people, hah.

Luckily it looks like we can get points off of Portugal now, but then they got red carded due to their goon today.

Not really. I worked with enough international companies (and people) throughout my career to develop an appreciation for soccer. Easy to generalize.

RE: World Cup Thread
That beginning of the second half until they scored was brutal to watch. Like watching someone hanging on the edge of a cliff. That was a sick ball for the header from the KC balla.

I'll bet that in Spain tonight, there's a lot of heavy drinking going on.

Defending champs - gone!

RE: World Cup Thread
Chile denied them any space in the midfield......something that teams have figured out to do against Spain that prevents them from building up their attacks.......and Chile just plain out hustled them. I would guess that they won 80% of the 50/50 balls.

I'm not sorry to see them go.

Now I want El Tri to get punked. Hate them.

El Tri will not make it far.....even if they make it out of group play their mid-field is not strong enough to get through the first round.

They looked okay in the second half against Brazil. I hated that.

RE: World Cup Thread
Mexico probably wouldn't even qualify for half the World Cups if they didn't get to play all their home qualifiers at 7500 feet in the air. Not that that's the only thing that makes Azteca tough.

I still don't like how we celebrated out tie as some sort of accomplishment against them.

Both Spain and England lose their first 2 matches. Crazy.
