His "chivalry" is drastically overrated and his war crimes ignored.

+1. I'd even say they're basically tied.
(In chronological order of birth)
Lenin. Stalin. Hitler. Mao Tse-tung.

The four horsemen of genocide and industrialized mass-murder. The sheer # of human beings killed on the altar of their ideological obsessions defies belief.

All they have one thing in common, their lack of religion.

If you compare Mao to other historical Chinese leaders you'll see he was pretty tame by comparison.

Richard I, often called Richard the Lionheart, embarked on the Crusades, who burned the great libraries for their heathen knowledge, setting civilization back a thousand years, could easily be on the list in spot #1. He was born before the lot of 'em, and his actions engendered generations of hatred between Muslims and Christians.

Wow, what a load of ignorant hyperbole. The Medieval times saw much progress and the generations of hatred started when Islam first attacked Christian lands.

H. H. Holmes

He was far and away the most evil man to ever exist. Every mass murderer, serial killers, or tyrannical leader that I've ever read about has had a reason to kill. Admittedly many of those reasons were sick (i.e. gratification), but they at least they all seemed to have a reason. I get the feeling that H. H. didn't for many of his countless murders. He just killed.

[To clarify, don't interpret my post as excusing the behavior of mass murders, serial killers, or tyrannical leaders in any way, shape, or form. They were all horrible people, and their crimes are inexcusable. I just think that they are less evil than H. H., but that's not saying much.]

I had not heard of this "man" before your post. I think what is most disturbing is his murder crimes occurred in the late 1800's. The following quote from him also gives a window into his heart and soul (soulless):

I was born with the devil in me. I could not help the fact that I was a murderer, no more than the poet can help the inspiration to sing. I was born with the evil one standing as my sponsor beside the bed where I was ushered into the world, and he has been with me since.

The Byzantine Empire deserved to die, HOD. Haven't you ever heard the expression Byzantine corruption? There's a reason for that expression, and Sultan Mehmet was the cure.

The Byzantine Empire was the last vestige of the Roman Empire, which while responsible for many innovations, was a barbaric, corrupt Empire responsible for endangering the majority of animals on the endangered species list today, enslaving millions, and murdering all those who didn't want to be slaves or Roman subjects. As for what happened in the Balkans, everything that happened probably would have occurred in the exact same way under the Byzantine Empire. It was already collapsing on it's own. The Turks under Faith Sultan Mehmet merely hurried due process along.

That's personal opinion. The collapse of the Byzantine Empire was a major loss for millions and for Christendom.

And it was an incredible loss for history. The Turks destroyed countless priceless, irreplaceable documents.

Arguably the largest mass murderer in history. I can't believe he has only come up once so far in this discussion.

2 things hold Stalin back from his proper place in history:
  • Hitler will always outshine him in early 20th Century horrible humans.
  • Uncle Joe had the best PR department on Earth, Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Hitler lost. Stalin won. That is why Hitler outshines him. Stalin killed more. He just didn't discriminate in who he killed. And he set the stage for the 50 year cold war.

In just one administration we went from defensive war to offensive war. From no central bank to The Federal Reserve. And we got ourselves involved in a war we had no business being in, and helped shape the post-war defeat so that a second war was inevitable. He was big into labor unions. He had the government take over railroads. He started a wave of anti-German bigotry (what, you mean Progressives can be bigoted too??) He was one of the organizers for the League of Nations, and wanted the LoN to be able to unilaterally bring the US military into a war. He started the FTC. He started the Income Tax.

If you want the antithesis of a Calvin Coolidge or a Thomas Jefferson or a George Washington ...... look no further. This guy was FAR worse than even FDR.

Didn't he start the income tax? (see someone else said it was already passed-but he used it)

I read a book where it said for centuries if an Arab wanted their children to behave, they would say the English would come and get them. Most of the crusaders were French and German. But Richard was successful.

But he was hardly evil. Other crusaders were much more brutal.

RE: What Person In History Do You Loathe?
It is difficult, even to this day, to get reliable statistics about the # of people who were killed either by Mao's direct orders, or by the orders of his underlings, or by the mob-violence that he unleashed and encouraged. Add to that, the fact that Mao's enforcers apparently did not keep the kind of meticulous records that the Germans kept in the 1933-45 era. So it really is anyone's guess, as to the total number of Mao's victims. Even so, I am skeptical that previous Chinese rulers killed more people than he did. For one, it was rare for any one person to rule over all of China. The ability to project force from a central location was much more difficult.

A Chinese emperor (Guangxu) died in 1908. I read once that the news of the Emperor's death did not reach Mao's village until 1913, by which point the "next" (and so far, last) Emperor had already abdicated. I mention this to give a sense of how spread out and unwieldy China was in those days, and how challenging it would have been for earlier rulers to initiate the kind of mass-horrors like "Great Leap Forward" and "Cultural Revolution" that Mao spawned.

An Lushan Rebellion

Censuses taken in the half-century before the rebellion show a gradual increase in population, with the last census undertaken before the rebellion, in 755, recording a population of 52,919,309 in 8,914,709 taxpaying households. However, a census taken in 764, the year following the end of the rebellion, recorded only 16,900,000 in 2,900,000 households. Later censuses count only households, but by 855 this figure had risen to only 4,955,151 households, little over half the number recorded in 755.[17] Some scholars have interpreted the difference in the census figures as implying the deaths of 36 million people, about two-thirds of the population of the empire.

That's 1/6th of the world population.

Tiaping Rebellion

With no reliable census at the time, estimates are necessarily based on projections, but the most widely cited sources put the total number of deaths during the 15 years of the rebellion at about 20–30 million civilians and soldiers.

Other sources put it at 100 million.
