Fury looks awesome. I think it may be unique as a WW2 tank movie.

yes. All Quiet on the Western front is also coming back in a remake that includes "Saving Private Ryan" like realism. It should be awesomely scary.

Just watched the trailer for Fury and it does look awesome with Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf.
Quote:April, 1945. As the Allies make their final push in the European Theatre, a battle-hardened army sergeant named Wardaddy commands a Sherman tank and her five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Outnumbered and out-gunned, and with a rookie soldier thrust into their platoon, Wardaddy and his men face overwhelming odds in their heroic attempts to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany.

Agree Fo Shizzle on the remake of All Quiet on the Western Front. Trench warfare scenes similar to the intensity and realism of the beach landing in SPR...can't imagine.

For those too young to have seen movies about the Forgotten War (Korea) try these out:
The Hunters
The Bridges at Toko Ri
Pork Chop Hill
The second half of "MacArthur".

And there are others, but these deal more specifically with combat.

Would never have thought of Casablanca as a war movie even though it was.

Enjoyed Combat! the TV series even though it got overly dramatic at times.

Russell Johnson has a small part in MacArthur…. seems very out of place.

I watched Downfall on Netflix. I would recommend it if it is still available. This movie is also the source material for all of the "Hitler rants" videos that are on Youtube.

Saving Private Ryan has been mentioned several times. So has The Longest Day. However I was also impressed with War Horse and (kind of war film) The King's Speech set in pre-WWII.

The Theater Production of War Horse is nothing short of astounding!

The visible puppeteers are very distracting.

I just watched Lone Survivor this weekend. They took some liberty with the story, but that's Hollywood (I read the book a couple years ago). I'm afraid they'll do the same with "American Sniper".

Black Hawk Down
Apocalypse Now
Platoon
The Patriot
Last of the Mohicans (not really a war movie but was during a conflict)
Saving Private Ryan
Full Metal Jacket

And I agree about Band of Brothers. Best series ever.

How it took all the preceding posts before we got to Apocalypse Now is beyond me.

Technically a war movie--Hotel Rwanda

I put off seeing Hotel Rwanda for some reason, when I finally did I was left asking myself why I put it off. It was outstanding.

In no order
Das Boot. See it in the original German
Downfall. Ditto about the German. Both movies make you feel like you are there
Conspiracy. Based on the actual notes of the meeting where the Final Solution was codified.
All's Quiet On the Western Front. Both the B and W and the one with John Boy
Bridge on the a River Kwai
The Beast. About a Russian tank crew in Afghanistan
A Bridge Too Far
The Deer Hunter
The Blue Max
The Patriot. Cheesy but about the only decent Revolutionary War movie

Not much out there Must See for Civil War or Korean War IMO. I also never miss
In Harms Way
The Big Red One

The Deer Hunter is the most painful movie I've ever watched. I just felt sick at the ending.

For modern war movies I really enjoyed Behind Enemy Lines.
For historical movies I also really enjoyed Defiance.

Elliot Gould
Laurence Olivier
Robert Redford

In Harms Way is close

I think The Longest Day beats them both as far as "all star casts go.

I don't know UofM_Tiger, it's pretty close but good call. Here's most of the top cast:
Eddie Albert
Richard Burton
Red Buttons
Sean Connery
Henry Fonda
Roddy McDowall
Robert Mitchum
George Segal
Rod Steiger
Robert Wagner
John Wayne

Midway is up there as well:
Charlton Heston
Henry Fonda
James Coburn
Glenn Ford
Hal Holbrook
Robert Mitchum
Cliff Robertson
Robert Wagner
Christopher George
Pat Morita
Dabney Coleman

Catch-22 cast is mighty impressive too.

The Bridge at Remagen should be on the list as well. It's the true story of a critical point in WWII.

Although I'd like to see the movie remade with a different cast. I was never a big fan of George Segal.

I really liked Catch-22 even if it was a strange movie. If you didn't read the book before seeing the film, you were screwed, IMHO. Have liked Alan Arkin ever since.

(How much of a movie has to be about a war in order for it be considered a "war film"?)

Gettysburg (1993)
Das Boot (1981/German)
A Bridge Too Far (1977)
Saving Private Ryan (1998) -- the portrayal of the landing at Normandy was simply incredible. One of the most vivid images I have ever seen, in any movie about any subject. The main "story" part of the movie was also excellent, but not brilliant IMHO.
