RE: The book thread
I'm now reading Code of the Lifemaker by James P. Hogan. I've read all of my Terry Pratchett books. Tomorrow I'll start Hogan's sequel, The Immortality Option.

RE: The book thread
Listening to audiobook of Code Name: Johnny Walker, about an Iraqi interpreter that worked with Americans, including SEALs, in Iraq. Pretty interesting so far.

I've just started "A Small Colonial War" by Robert Frezza. After that comes the sequel, "Fire In A Faraway Place".

RE: The book thread
Just finished After Mandela: The struggle for freedom in Post-Apartheid South Africa. Also, currently in the middle of Economic Thought Before Adam Smith. Need to pick up something to replace the South Africa book, but not quite sure which way to go yet.

I'm about 20% through and I find it fascinating. He just finished discussing the School of Salamanca in 16th century Spain. It's definitely a bit of a slog, but that doesn't stop it from being very interesting. Here's a link: http://mises.org/document/3985/Economic-...t-Volume-I
Haven't read any Ayn Rand. I'd like to, but my reading has a purpose right now and her books really don't fit in.

so you're running thru the gamut of philosophers, i take it? ayn rand was a philosopher. is this a work of fiction? one of the central characters in my book is named theoretical winston III. he's the son of an idiot. kudos to you for kicking yourself in the ass to do research. i'm going to read dante before finishing a short story but i really need to read the bible. dostoyevsky would dig like dj premier, i just can't do that but luckily i take inspiration from everything i read, maybe to a fault. one part of the novel sounds like olde english and then beat vernacular

no not philosophers, mostly a combination of autocratic rulers and poorly run democracies, with some economic theory thrown in. This is definitely not a work of fiction, it's more of a Machiavellian guidebook. Machiavelli is one of my favorite writers and my goal is to be able to write in his unemotional, detached style. With every passing day I believe more and more that the right to dictate the policies affecting our nation's future should not be in the hands of the people, as I don't believe they're capable of making the right decisions. There's much more, but that's the crux of what I'm trying to accomplish. It's really a pet project for me; something I believe in, but also enjoy trying to accomplish.

I can sum it up for you. It's basically a one man, one vote system. If you're the man, you've got the vote.

RE: The book thread
ok. you want a dictatorship. but a smartly run one. one that wouldn't make the people suffer and wouldn't allow the leader(s) to become greedy. but is that machiavellian? didn't he advocate assassination? and i'm pretty sure he's a philosopher. anyway, i hope your mind isn't clouded with one train of thought and you give opposing voices their due. if you want my opinion, as regards this subject matter, read anything by hermann hesse or fyodor dostoyevsky. but perhaps you're familiar

the writing is machiavellian in style, it isn't machiavellian content.
naturally i'm familiar with them but they're buried behind St Augustine, John Locke, etc. I have more important research to do first. Not to mention I can really only handle 3 books at one time. I find it difficult to do more than that

Glad to be of assistance, swoosh. Just be sure not to get confused about who said Lord Acton's quote about power corrupting.
