He will be missed. Lew was a tremendous supporter and advocate of Temple and Temple athletics. He was instrumental in getting Temple back into the Big East and recently donated 25 million to Temple’s medical school. Many believe he was one of the people outside Temple that would have spearheaded the on campus stadium project.

I never met him, but I’m told he was an outstanding person, he will be missed.

A tragic loss to his family. My prayers for his family.

I like what he was trying to do with the Philadelphia Inquirer, tough environment for publications currently. Katz made his own fortune, but was always looking out for the less fortunate.

He did a lot for our University as well. He's one of the reasons an on campus stadium was going to and should happen. I have no doubt the field will be named for him.

I believe he was also the chair for Temple's athletics committee. Some of you may remember him from the Big East press conference for Temple's addition. He was the main speaker for Temple, although Addazio and our former AD Bill Bradshaw were present.

A big loss for the Temple community and really the entire region.

RE: Lewis Katz, Temple alum, dies in crash
from today's Inky:

Mr. Katz grew up knowing what it meant to be poor, how it felt to need and not have. Those lean years in Camden marked him. All his life, he remained keenly sensitive to others who struggled to get by.

When as a teenager Temple offered him a scholarship, he grabbed it - arriving at the university scared and worried that he was out of his league. Instead, he excelled, going on to graduate first in his class from Dickinson Law School.

He would later tell friends that he loved Temple because it was the school for kids who, like him, desperately wanted to get an education, not a school for those headed to college because their parents decided they should go.

The epitome of Temple Made
