RE: AAC adding a 13th member?
Why would they only add 1 school unless they were planning on losing 1 school?

I'll believe that when I see it.

Or maybe what Tubs meant was that the new school they are adding is Navy.

The only way I could see BYU joining is if it a Notre Dame type deal. BYU plays 5 football games vs the AAC and joins for Olympic sports. They would be a 13th member, but only for Olympic sports.

I was going to say that maybe the ACC and SEC labeling them as non-P5 may force them into a conference but looking at their schedule the last 4 years, the only teams they play from either conference are UVA and GT. UVA played them the first 4 weeks when it's easy for BYU to find opponents. ND plays them too but I would expect ND to continue to play them regardless of the labeling.
Since BYU plays mostly MWC, a few Pac 12 teams, and NMSU and Idaho later in the year, they have the leverage to avoid having to join the AAC as a full member. A ND type deal makes a lot of sense though. Even though BYU can stay full independent, playing AAC schools would be a big improvement over the bottom half of their schedule in quality and media markets.

Interesting. Did anyone HEAR this said?
BYU and UMass both interest me for various reasons. Same with Army, to a much lesser extent.

BYU's current conference, the WCC, makes much more sense for them, for multiple reasons, than an Olympic sports arrangement with the AAC. Further, though BYU has a solid basketball program, they wouldn't make AAC men's hoops stronger overall than it already is, and BYU is two time zones away from the east coast, so it doesn't make sense for the AAC either.

If BYU wants to join a G5 conference why would they go all the way to the oBE when they have their old running mates of the MW in their own backyard. Doesn't really make a lot of sense to me.

They also play a lot of AAC teams and have a bowl tie in with the AAC

Which would make them the 12th member for Olympic Sports, since Navy is FB-only.
I'm skeptical whether BYU is practical for the AAC for Olympic Sports. But a scheduling agreement wouldn't have to mirror the ND deal in every respect ... the conference scheduling in slots to allow four games home and away in late October and early November could be for some other quid pro quo.
If would be odd for BYU to join the American FB-only after turning down the Old Big East in its final days ... unless the Church Elders decided that they want to evangelize among the east coast and southeastern heathen after all.

Without seeing the quote, that's exactly what I am wondering. I know it was 13 said, but maybe that was a slip of the tongue and he meant 12. That would be fairly easy to imagine given they were talking today about life in an expanded conference.
Also important to note, coaches generally don't know anything about expansion. There's yet to be one word from a coach about a school/conference upcoming move that I've seen that's revealed anything. Usually the presidents are the ones to listen to, followed by the ADs.

I think the door's always open for three of those above. UMass is the odd one out, but the most likely. BYU makes sense on paper because of the scheduling "challenges" they are having, but I have a very tough time wrapping my head around the Cougs' media deals and bowl affiliations. Navy's one thing...BYU's something else.
Air Force won't put their ollies somewhere else just to jump into the AAC. They're pretty tight with CSU and Wyo, and AFA lacrosse is said to be having a bit of a time getting their lacrosse into a conference.
One wonders about UTEP...
