Houston-UNLV Agree to Sept. 20 Meeting in Houston
Houston will move its Sept. 27, 2014 game vs. Tennessee Tech to Sept. 5, 2015
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Football program announced Thursday it will host UNLV this fall on Saturday, Sept. 20, and move its Sept. 27 meeting vs. Tennessee Tech to Saturday, Sept. 5, 2015.
Kickoff time for the UNLV game on Sept. 20 in Houston will be announced by Sept. 8 by The American Athletic Conference and its television partners.
“We are grateful this opportunity presents itself now as it was not available two months ago when we originally announced our schedule. Adding a third FBS opponent was a priority for our program as it relates to the strength of schedule component of the new College Football Playoff,” said Houston Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Mack Rhoades. “We’d like to thank Tennessee Tech Director of Athletics Mark Wilson and UNLV Director of Athletics Tina Kunzer-Murphy for their help in completing this late rearrangement.
“With our non-conference scheduling philosophy, we always look to schedule two opponents from major conferences each season, one home and one away as part of home-and-home agreements, a third FBS team as part of a home-and-home agreement and an FCS opponent for a home game. Our goal each season is no less than six home games with the possibility of alternating seasons of six and seven home games a year. Following each season we reevaluate our non-conference scheduling philosophy as the landscape of college football evolves. ”
With the Tennessee Tech move, Houston has just one 2015 non-conference opponent slot to fill as the Cougars will travel to Louisville on Sept. 12, 2015, and host Texas State on Sept. 26, 2015.
Future non-conference opponents already announced for Houston include Louisville (2015-16), Texas State (2015-16), Tennessee Tech (2015), Arizona (2017-18), Texas Tech (2017-18, 2021-22) and Kansas (2019-20).
UNLV and Houston have met on two occasions with Houston claiming both wins. The Cougars traveled to Las Vegas in 1989 for a 69-0 UH win before returning home and claiming the series’ second win in 1990, 37-9, inside the Astrodome.
The Rebels are coming off a 2013 season that saw the Mountain West Conference program finish 7-5 and return to a bowl game for the first time since 2000.

Interesting for two reasons. One, it's the first time I've seen the scheduling philosophy stated in public (though I had heard this was the policy some time back and have mentioned it before). Second---it's interesting that this appears to be a one-and-done to shore up this years schedule. No return game is mentioned and apparently we only paid 400k for the game--which is a pretty decent deal. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that they are getting a part of gate at that price.

That is good news for the AAC but Great news for Houston. Nice work, and good luck against the Rebels.

Nice work here on many fronts by UH AD Mack Rhodes. Gives UH an extra week to prep for UCF as well.

I got curious about gate receipt splits and college football. Big 10 is the only conference that engages in the practice.
