Any system run and administered by a bunch of slack-jawed civil servants is doomed to failure.

VA is technically single-provider, not single-payer. Single-provider systems have sorta worked, albeit with major delays, up to about 6 million people, but no larger. Single-payer systems don't work well at any size.
