The Temple Owls finished the 1979 year 10-2 and ranked #17 in the final AP poll. They beat California in the bowl game 28-17. I believe that may our highest ranking.

Tied Mississippi 0-0.
Beat Mississippi State 17-10.
Mississippi finished 7-1-2 and ranked 7th in both polls.
Mississippi State finished 7-2-2 and unranked in the AP poll and ranked 11th in the UPI poll.
Memphis State was unranked in the AP poll and ranked 14th in the UPI poll.
Please explain.
1) Polls were taken prior to the bowls so Ole Miss was 7-0-2 when the rank was determined
2) The AP only had the top 10 in 1963. Memphis was in the others receiving votes so would have been top 20.
3) Miss St beat a top 5 team and tied a top 10 team. Losses were to a top 10 team and Memphis. Memphis tied a top 10 team, but had no top 10 wins with best win being Miss St. Thus a similar ranking.
Valiant effort, but epic fail.

The '76 team went 11-0-0 (including a 29-20 win over Tulane) but was passed over by the major bowl-games, probably because of a light schedule. I don't know which "minor" bowl (there were only 12 (!) bowl-games then) invited Rutgers, but Rutgers declined and chose to maintain the legacy of a perfect season rather than jeopardize it for the sake of the Tangerine Bowl or whatever.

From what I recall, it was the Independence Bowl -- playing McNeese State. The Team thought they deserved better, and declined the invitation, but for the most part the stadium really wasn't full on gameday (only seated about 23K at the time). And yes, it was a schedule that still had our traditional foes (Princeton, Lehigh, Lafayette) along with 2 future conference mates (UL and UConn) and Tulane.
I think the official reason they gave was conflict with the University's exam schedule. At that time, people might have believed it. Even though it was a great year for Rutgers sports (Final Four in basketball and undefeated football) they still didn't fully embrace the philosophy of athletic departments in other big state schools.
I went to the game against Colgate on a cold Thanksgiving night in Giants Stadium, though, and it was a great end to a perfect season!

That was my freshman year. I remember their coach chain-smoking on the sidelines.

BTW, in the 1940s, Tulsa became the first school to play in 5 straight New Year's Day bowl games, including 2 Sugar Bowls & an Orange Bowl.
Tulsa's great run in the 1940s was largely orchestrated by Head Coach (1941-'45) Henry Frnka (Czech ancestry; pronounced "Franka") who went 40-9-1 in his 5 years there. He had been an assistant at Temple in 1940.
Coach Frnka accepted the HC position at Tulane the following season and had some success there, too. With kids in high-school, his family stayed in Tulsa for 1946. Tragically, Coach Frnka's son Henry Jr. died that year at age 17 after being injured in a football game for Will Rogers HS against Tulsa Central.
Curious how three universities that Frnka worked for so long ago are now in the same league.

Frank Burns, who had a few other solid teams at Rutgers, too. He was named national COY for that '76 team.
That was Tulane's second year in the Superdome. The novelty helped attendance remain strong for a while. It was really only by 1989 or so that Tulane realized it had made a horrible mistake by leaving the old stadium.
