The title of both the al.com and the Street's articles are deceiving.
It should be called "least educated", rather than dumbest.
Not that we've got any shortage of dumbasses.

There are many people in this state who are at best willfully ignorant, and at worst dumb as a box of rocks.

I would like to see the same test done with cost of living index instead of gross dollars made.

I have said it before, but Alabama is probably the #1 state in rankings on not giving a flip about what other states think about them.

That would be willful ignorance which many, me included, would argue is the worst flavor.

RE: Alabama named one of the '10 dumbest states in America'
Well, reading the article, I take issue with MD being in the top 5 of the "smartest..." I've never seen more idiots who can't negotiate driving down a 6 lane road amongst other vehicles in my life (except maybe in Turkey where lanes have NO meaning). I can't HONESTLY believe all those vehicles were delivered without functioning turn signals...

The list directly correlates to educational funding by state: No surprise.
The more red a state is, the less funding it gives to education: Also no surprise.

RE: Alabama named one of the '10 dumbest states in America'
People in Alabama are no "dumber" than those in other states. They are, however, much less educated than in many states and seemingly proud of it. That may be why Wayne Flint titled his book on Alabama as "Po' but Proud"(Po' is tied to lack of formal education). The last statistical analysis of the state showed that out of every 100 who entered the 9th grade in Alabama, about 60 graduated from HS. Of these, 30 went on to some level of Post Secondary school (JUCO or 4 year), and of these 15-18 graduated at some point.
The state appears to now be on a downward spiral in the majority of public school districts who can't attract teachers on a competitive basis. They have to hire those they can get rather than the ones they might want and pray they get lucky.
Young teachers, like the Judson College graduate quoted in the recent NEWS article, are looking to other states where their governments are seen as less hostile to public school teachers (look at the current political ads where an opposing candidate being backed by state teachers is the same as being backed by Satan - or Obama).
BTW, my granddaughter in Indiana received a $3,000 per year statewide raise before starting her first year of teaching (2013-2014). How long ago did Alabama teachers get such a raise? Getting a 2% statewide raise on the state's share (which can vary from 60% to 100% of the total pay) of a teacher's pay check from 2007 to 2015 (so far) is not going to excite the best and brightest youth to pursue such a career, especially in the more challenging districts in Alabama.
