I wish we had stayed a Republic then we wouldn't ever had to worry about electing some dip from Chicago to be president.
Or for that matter those from out of state would not be Native born Texans so they would not be eligible for the top office of President of the Great Republic of Texas and we'd never have California, Illinois type politicians.
Interesting. What if Texas had remained a Republic ?

RE: OT: Texas
I'm not sure but I thought I read somewhere that when Texas joined the Union we had a stipulation that said that if we wanted to secede that we could. I don't know if that's correct but no one has probably looked into it. Another thing, Texas is the only state that can legally fly their Texas flag at the same level as the U.S. flag.

That's an urban legend. As long as certain positional guidelines of the flag code are observed, any state flag may be flown at the same height as the U.S. national flag.

I heard that the stipulation was that we could break into up to five states if we wanted.
Texas cannot secede, but retains the right to divide into five (5) separate states.

That's always the problem... Folks flee to the South to escape high taxes, and then turn around & vote for the same type people who made life miserable for them where they're from.
Maddening.

As a person that has visited over 30 states, 6 countries and lived in North Carolina for 4 years... There is no place like Texas. You just have to experience it.

Daughter lives just outside of San Antonio. The area around SA is rapidly losing its country charm and flavor. Urban sprawl as far as the eye can see. Really disheartening to see so many chain stores, big boxes, dense condo's and apartments springing up everywhere. Mickey D's The epitomy of everything mediocre!! Soon there will be smog. humidity and unbearable heat. Yuck.

1. There is truth to the slogan "Texas, a whole other country". Texas is the only state that was actually a separate nation (1836-1845)before joining the Union.
2. The Texas economy was ranked at 14th in the world in 2009, just below Russian at #13 and ahead of Australia at #15.
3. Texas has 254 counties; far more than any other state.
4. Texarkana, Texas is closer to Chicago than to El Paso, Texas. El Paso is closer to Los Angeles than it is to Texarkana.
5. Texas has more that it's share of "carpet baggers", but native Texans and long term residents have a fierce pride in the State.
No. 1 is not true as regards the word, "only". Vermont declared its independence from both England and the other American colonies/states in 1777 and remained independent until 1791. It had kind of a mixed bag of government, but Vermont minted its own coins and is generally referred to as the Republic of Vermont during that 14 year period prior to joining the union. For all that have labored under the impression that Vermont was one of the original 13 colonies -- not so.

I think you will find that no Republic of California ever existed. There was never a government -- just a flag. The whole event lasted something like 30 days.

Answer to what if Texas would have remained a republic...
The U.S. Govt would have had to bail it out by now.

They could've been like Canada...shielded by the US military force, so they can dabble in socialism & sending mediocre actors south of their border..

I doubt that very seriously.
The Texas Constitution requires that the Legislature budget for no more than the amount of revenue that the Comptroller certifies will be available. The requirement that Texas must balance its budgets is a major difference between state and federal budgeting, for Texas cannot run a deficit, while the national government clearly can (Its at 10 trillion). The fact that Texas must only spend what is available presses the legislature to FIRST spend it's money on federally mandated programs (like Medicare) and constitutionally required systems (like Education).

RE: OT: Texas
Just some useless historical tidbits...the 1839 Texas Republic flag was actually a variation of the Republic of West Florida flag. An 1810 short-lived republic comprised of the lower gulf counties of Alabama, Mississippi & Louisiana later annexed into the US.
Another variation of the flag flew over the Republic of Mississippi just after succession, & the song "Bonnie Blue Flag" was written as the inspired author saw it flying over Jackson, MS.
