Random fact: The federal government authorized 4 transcontinental railroads. In addition to receiving from $16,000 to $48,000 per mile, depending on the terrain, the railroads also averaged a grant of 12,800 acres of land for every mile of track laid.

The amount of public land given to corporations to build the railroads was 174 million acres. This is a little more than the entire state of Texas.

Some pictures I took at work of spiny-backed orb-weaver spiders, specifically, Gasteracantha cancriformis (belly-thorn, crab-shaped). They're tiny, maybe .25" wide. They are harmless to humans.
