wow. Thats awesome. I'm doing the 8 mile trail race at the NC whitewater center memorial day. its the first actual event i've ever done since picking up running to replace mountain biking when my children were born starting in 2020 (suddenly didn't have 3-4 hours to go ride).

aiming for a ~9 minute mile pace depending on how much of the route is MTB path, which is much more twisty and slower going.

trail running>>>>>>>road running.

RE: Running/Jogging/Walking
Just finished a week where I ran 53 miles total. It's a new personal best for mileage ran for the week. Runs consisted of a 20, a 17, and a 16 mile run.

Never had any desire to do ultras. I've done 8 marathons, but my last one was at age 28 (a long, long time ago). Haven't had any serious running injuries, but the ones I had were all when training for a marathon.

I've done the Peachtree Road Race about a dozen years in a row (much slower than I ran 10ks at age 28!), but I've only done one race other than the Peachtree in the last 20 years or so. That's kind of my one road race a year.

I know that this is a thread about running/jogging/walking, but would I get credit for swimming 4500 yards in 2:00:50?

Another 20 mile run completed today in 3:14:24. Should I do a third 20 mile run this week?

RE: Running/Jogging/Walking
I ran a marathon yesterday in 4:02:47. I missed out on a sub-4 hour time when I failed to hold my pace in the last mile of the run; the inclines of this part of the run slowed me, and I had nothing left to give to force the pace.

RE: Running/Jogging/Walking
Our high school coach had us run around the campus before we finished our class in PE. I was thin and enjoyed running, especially on that St Augustine grass we had, which grew naturally in Houston, even amongst the tall pines at the back of our campus. Then while I was at Rice, I ran the stands in Rice Stadium in the afternoons. In my Middle Ages into my fifties I enjoyed taking a jog around the neighborhood, using a heart rate monitor. Speed and distance were never an objective. Now in my late sixties I do enjoy regular walks, again watching the heart rate, for thirty minutes to an hour. Those hour walks wear me out. We have some inclines and they are enough for me. My doc wants me to limit my blood pressure and so I am on Losartan. The BP extremes kill the kidneys if you have high trigs and cholesterol, I learned. And you could have a stroke. It has taken me way too long to understand the damage you can do to your innerds with a high carb diet and then trying to work it off.

RE: Running/Jogging/Walking
I wonder if any of y'all have advice:

Grew up in Pinellas County running on mostly flat surfaces with some minimal inclines & declines plus a few bridges to cross major roads. Felt good about my runs, especially training for running my wife's & my first two marathons the last two years at WDW.

However, we've moved to Sanford, NC, where things are exceptionally hilly, & I just feel like it's doing more harm than good in my training. I'm getting discouraged, especially as I really want to get as close to 4 hrs this year running the marathon on my own. Any advice on either how to beat the hills or to not get discouraged bc of what they're doing to my time & energy?

Thanks in advance.

I live about 30 minutes due north of Greensboro near the NC-Virginia line. My neighborhood is hilly but I'm not a jogger/runner. I typically walk 2 miles at least 5 days a week. I like the slopes for strengthening my legs and the cardio/deep breathing I get from it - especially on the up-slopes. I can't answer how that may impact your marathon time but it would seem if you could master the hills then your running would be stronger/better on a level surface. I know we have some public parks with walking paths/paved surfaces that are flat. I assume you have some of those around or at a local high/middle school?
