OT: Any Georgia Southern fans on this board pretty familiar with Savannah?
I'm planning a trip and have a few questions. I think of new questions all the time so I'd rather PM one or two people than keep bumping this thread to the top of the board. General comments are certainly welcome though. If anyone ever makes it to nc id be happy to answer questions as well.

Thanks! 04-cheers

I used to live there and managed Ga Southern as an account for Coke North America back in the early 2000's. I'd be happy to give you some info on Savannah...where to hang and not to hang.

I work in Savannah, basically right downtown on River Street, so feel free to PM or post here and I'll be glad to help anyway I can. One thing I'll mention without being prompted:
Go have a drink and an appetizer at Rocks on the Roof at the Bohemian hotel, it is pricey, but its literally on the roof of the hotel and has an outdoor deck where you can look out over the river and see across into a nature preserve on the South Carolina side, go at sunset, it is a great spot. There is a brand new hotel the Cotton Sail opening just West of the Bohemian, which is also advertising a rooftop bar, so that may be good to try as an alternative or an addition, but I can't vouch for their food and drinks yet.

River Street is a glittering, multi-faceted gem along the broad Savannah River. The century old buildings, once cotton warehouses, have been converted to antique shops, distinctive boutiques, spectacular galleries, quaint brew pubs, fabulous restaurants, unique nightspots, elegant inns and hotels. Bustling with welcoming hospitality, it’s also the place to see Savannah from the river that made her by taking a cruise or watching ships from around the globe sail into one of the busiest ports in America.

Easily my favorite city. Love River Street. Love the neighborhoods. Tybee is a gem. Its like Florida in the 1950's before they started dropping hotels and condos every 22 feet

When are you planning on coming down? It's going to be hotter than heck here shortly, so you may want to take that into consideration with your planning.

There are plenty of great places to eat and drink.
Paula Dean's is not one of them. 03-wink

I've never actually eaten there (or had a reason to), so I do have a hard time saying anything about it... but everyone I know says its OK at best. None of the locals eat there. Ever. It's a tourist place. Literally a buses of people show up at a time.

If OP wants that type of food (southern/home cooked), Mrs. Wilkes' is the place to go.

Mrs.Wilkes I was trying to remember that name it is also on one of the prettiest streets. The squares are really cool also river street when a big ship is rolling bye .The bar tender asking if you want your drink to go is different. Myrtle Beach needs to have Savannah s attitude towards partying.

If you do anything but eat seafood(read:shrimp), do yourself a favor and find Zunzi's. It's a South African sandwich shop with some of the best smoked sausage I've ever had. Definitely a must try!

RE: OT: Any Georgia Southern fans on this board pretty familiar with Savannah?
I spent almost an hour putting this together. With people potentially making trips to Statesboro/Savannah for football games, I figured it could be useful to others, so I posted it publicly.

*****

Anyone else traveling with you? Wife, kids, drinking buddies? As far as attractions, there is a few cool things to see (depending on what you are into) but for the most part, I view the "attraction" of the city, is the food, the old buildings, the squares, etc.

If you are staying on tybee here are few places to eat:
A.J.'s Dockside is a great place for dinner - can watch the sun set over the back river of Tybee.
http://ajsdocksidetybee.com/

Social has some great food, never had a bad meal there. Known for their pita tacos (lobster/orange pork/steak/shrimp) and sea food.
http://www.tybeeislandsocialclub.com/#!menu/c2557

Fannies and Spanky's are on the beach strip - more generic barfood with some fried seafood thrown in.
http://fanniesonthebeach.com/
http://www.spankysbeachside.com/Our_Menu.html

Huc-a-poos is on the north end of tybee tucked in a small lot. Pizza place with a big porch, big bar, very laid back.
http://hucapoos.com/

For the most part, everything on tybee is very casual. Especially the places right by the pier.

On the topic of the pier.. If you plan on spending the day on the beach, don't setup within 500 yards of the pier. Unless you like watching a bunch of piss drunk rednecks that come in from the surrounding counties. We tend to setup on 18th street, the very south end, or the back river. Much less crowded, and away from some of the rif-raf. Of those locations Only 18th street has a bathroom (The pier and surrounding streets do as well), the water is still a little cold to get in right now. So 18th might be your best bet. It's better to setup away from the pier, and walk to it to check it out, than be setup right next to it.

When you head into historic Savannah, there are tons of great places to eat. I'll name a few, but if you've heard of something else or have any questions, feel free to ask. One thing about Savannah is there is plenty of good places to eat & drink.

Fine Dining:
Pink House - an old mansion converted into a restaurant. Great service, great food.
http://www.plantersinnsavannah.com/the-o...ouse-menu/

The Mansion On Forysth - Never eaten here but supposed to be absolutely great.
http://www.mansiononforsythpark.com/medi...menu_3.pdf

Alligator Soul - Some of the best meals I've had in town. Exotic game is their specialty.
http://www.alligatorsoul.com/savannah/menuview

Seafood:
Charthouse: I think it's actually a chain, but the food is good and it's on river street
http://www.chart-house.com/menus_pdf/CHSV_dinn.pdf

Vic's on the River - High end, very good from what I've heard
http://www.vicsontheriver.com/pages/about.html

Brunch:
Huey's - Creole inspired, great place for brunch. Their beignets come with a hot praline sauce that will literally change your life. Ask for extra. It's literally some of the best stuff I've ever eaten.
http://www.hueysontheriver.net/menu/

B.Mathews. - Great for brunch lunch or dinner
http://bmatthewseatery.com/

Regular Lunch/Dinner:
Bohemian - They have a roof top bar that you'll want to go up. Great view from the top of the river, VERY cool if a ship is coming in. Typically have live music at night.
http://www.bohemianhotelsavannah.com/dining/

Zunzi's is a category of it's own. It's only open for lunch, and get there a little early, a line will form. It was on the food network for "Best Sandwich In America", and it's not even the best thing on their menu. Get Oliver's lunch. Owners are a married couple, one from south african, the other french.
http://zunzis.com/

Vinnie Van Go-Go's
Cash only pizza place in city market. Outside seating.
http://www.vinnievangogo.com/

Tubby's on the river: Casual seafood, second story porch over looking the river. Very cool place to eat and have a drink or two and watch the container ships come down the river.
http://liveoakstore.com/tubbysriverstreet

Mrs. Wilkes - Southern style home cooked food. Fried chicken, collards, mac & cheese, all the good stuff. Come hungry.
http://mrswilkes.com/menu/

For the attractions, Bonaventure Cemetery is worth a drive through. It has graves dating back pre-Civil War. Tons of huge oak trees, very picturesque. The "midnight in the garden of good and evil" statue was originally there, and parts of the movie were filmed there as well.

I'd plan on taking one afternoon, and grabbing a beer to go, and walking around downtown and looking at all the squares (don't have to see them all, they do get a little redundant), but walking with a cold one while sight seeing makes it all the better. There are tons of hole-in-the-wall types of bars that have tons of character. Some of the best places I think are the ones underground because you get to see all the old architecture.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Since you are taking your girlfriend . . .save room for desert one night and stop at LuLu's. Fabulous cheesecake and the Lulutini is to die for!
http://www.luluschocolatebar.net/.

I grew up in Statesboro and work in Savannah so I know the area pretty well. PM me if you have any other specific questions.

What? no Spanky's? I used to love the one by the mall, but the River St version is basically the same (expect pricer for less food).
Vinny Vans is always good for a late nite bite of pizza.
City Market is nice place to hang sometimes live bands play there.

River St. is good if you've never been. Several restaurants and bars. Remember you can get your drinks to-go (only in the downtown area).

There is a great dessert shop/bar off MLK that is a cool place to bring a someone special.

I used to just hang out at the Bar-Bar at City Market (below the wild wings). Free pool if you can get a table (only 2 available). It has been a number of years since I've been, but it was like that for a long time.

Eh, Spanky's and Tubbys are just about the same thing, (owners are brothers I believe) and Tubby's has a much better view at their downtown location.

I always forget that there is a Tubby's on River St. Only think of the Tubby's in Thunderbolt. Yes they serve basically the same food (love the chicken fingers and real honey dip)
