AA still in play
Two of the universities that I work with are looking to hire faculty. One is active, the other will begin shortly.
Both groups have been told that hiring minority candidates is highly desired by their universities.
So, despite the surplus of candidates interested in obtaining tenure track positions at research universities (although this isn't sociology), the currently active institution is struggling to fill its slot (and actually have leveraged it into two slots), as the preferred candidates are holding out for more start up money, and assistance to find jobs for their spouses. The second institution is expecting the same bidding war.
All because universities are arbitrarily limiting the pool of viable candidates.
Oh, and you wonder why tuitions are rising faster than inflation?
