I wonder if that was hyperbole to generate some interest in the lower reaches of the rankings by dropping a big name in there (see also: Kansas). Realistically, Virginia would contend for the Sun Belt title or at least be competitive in the top half. For that matter, they'd probably do just fine in CUSA or the MAC. They're not great, and London may be a dead man walking, but they're not 80s-era Columbia either.

We'll save that distinction for Georgia State. Even if they keep booking DIII schools.

This is a really slow time of the year (with no disrespect intendened to our Monarchs on the diamond), so I thought we could all use a little something to help us get through another day while waiting for Monarch football to get here. I am particularly excited about the LB position.

It has, IMO, been a notable weakness since the departure of Craig Wilkins, and was surely a major determinant in the decision to shorten the UNC game.

If our OL can gel (and that is actually my biggest question for 2014) then we may have a real FBS team this year!

You can't teach what Mayers brought to this program. Easily one of my favorites of all time. In terms of physical ability, though, I think Vinny Lowe has a chance to be just like him.

New Mexico State at 111. Still no ODU

Nick will always be one of my favorites. Dude was like 5-5 (jk) and didn't hesitate to fight for more yards and never went down easy. My favorite from that video is the slants at the goal line. You couldn't cover him on the corner routes near the end zone in man coverage. Teams knew that and he faked them out of their shoes on the slants.

Roger that. A couple of times in the highlights, you could see that the D-backs had been coached up for the corner route, and then Mayers left them standing there holding their jocks and with body language that says "WTF" when he gave them the juke and went on the slant for the wide open TD. I do believe it may well be a while before we see another WR as good and as exciting as Nick Mayers.

Seems reasonable enough, and the writer's definitely high on the Monarchs as a long-term play no matter what happens this season. I do think 8-4 as a best-case scenario may be a little too best-case, and 2-10 is probably a little too worst. But a nice enough read.

At least five of ODU's FBS opponents are ranked below them in the Orlando countdown (FIU, UTEP, NC State, E. Michigan, La. Tech).

So since we already know ODU is 106th in the USA Today countdown, anyone want to hazard a guess as to where they land here? I'll say ... I dunno, 93?

Let's see. ESPN Power Rankings have the Monarchs at 77. We know Orlando will not be worse than 97. I'll split the difference and go for 87.
