That makes sense in a football thread.

Or, as my dad always said when a yankee tried to pronounce the word, "a pecan is a nut, a peecan is something one uses in an emergency".

Allow me to indulge myself with a short story.

My grandfather was born and raised in the Valdosta area where my paternal family line has lived since before the civil war. Lived there most of his life except a stint in the army in WWII and the time my dad was growing up they lived in Florida. I was born and raised in Florida and not the most in tune with southern pronunciations (I was raised by my mother a school teacher from Pittsburgh, PA.) she raised me to speak without an accent (she really doesn't have one except for the odd word like route being pronounced rut).

When my grandparents retired they moved back to outside Quitman, GA to live out the rest of their lives. They had three pecan trees in their medium yard, which my grandfather would gather by the bushel-full regularly through out the season. It wasn't uncommon for is to have 15 gallon sized bags of raw pecan haves in our deep freeze at any given time. Anytime I'd visit he would man me with a 5 gallon bucket and a short poll with a contraption on the end similar to a golf ball picker upper. You press this down on a nut and it would slip between the sprung wire rods and up into a mini pail, which after it filled up I would dump into the 5 gallon bucket. They did it I'm sure to burn off some of my youthful exuberance, but I really loved doing it.

Long Story Short (too late)

My mother (whose family my uncle traced back to landing at Plymouth Rock with the pilgrims) is about as Yankee as it comes pronounces it Pecan as you do. My grandfather pronounced it Peecan. I don't think he's wrong either. YMMV.

Omitting Tulsa was an oversight and I apologize. Houston is no longer in C-USA and the thread is a salute to C-USA teams.

Thank you for the clarification, fanatico. I understand why you did not include the Cougars. I just felt it would be appropriate to include them when I mentioned Tulsa because they were charter members of C-USA and the vast majority of their current record and reputation is built on their time in the Conference. I will be glad when ODU deserves and gets a little love based on the Monarchs' play in C-USA.

The biggest loss is three year starter at QB Logan Kilgore. Although, we have three young guys battling for the job. It's up in the air and anyone can win the position. And I mean that in a good way. All three have talent. We also lost some key O-linemen. It will be interesting to see how those holes are filled. As for D, returning 8 starters including Byard and Barber who will both be all conference IMO (sure I'm biased). The MT/WKU game is always fun because as you said we do hate each other. 100 miles of hate!

Barber, dude can bring the lumber. I'd hate to draw him in Oklahoma drills. Reminds of this,

A lot of WAC teams on that list. It was not a good fit geographically for us, but the WAC was good for us in the long run. Enjoyed the days of playing Boise St., Fresno St. (team I loved playing the most), Hawaii (liked beating them too), and Nevada. But love where we are now. Can drive to away games. Love it.

Yeah, I was always very impressed that Tech got into the WAC. I have no doubt that it helped get you into CUSA. I mean, you've got to figure Banowsky was grasping at any possibility to distance CUSA from the Sun Belt.

We had some really good games against no. 2 on the list. FSU came to Ruston ranked in the top 20 in 2004 at 3-0 with blow out road wins against Washington and Kansas St. At that time they had a really good defense and I remember watching them beat down KSU on TV and thinking it would be an L 2 weeks later in Ruston. During warmups they ran right through our team and started a fight. According to a couple of friends there after the teams went back to locker room before kickoff the Tech locker room sounded like thunderstorm inside. We won 28-21 and it started a rivalry during our time in the WAC.

We also bitchslapped Fresno St on their home field by about 40 points the last time we played them in 2012 (or 2011?).
