Ohio State to pay out over $2M


COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State will pay more than $2 million in total guarantees to bring Virginia Tech, Kent State and Cincinnati to Ohio Stadium this fall.

The university disclosed the payouts on Monday at the request of The Associated Press.

Cincinnati, located a couple of hours away, will receive the most money -- $888,246 -- to play the Buckeyes on Sept. 27. Kent State, also located about two hours away, will get $850,000 to appear in Columbus on Sept. 13. Virginia Tech, which comes to Ohio Stadium on Sept. 20 as the first of a home-and-home series, will get a $350,000 guarantee.

The Buckeyes get an $850,000 guarantee to open against Navy on Aug. 30 at Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe this was supposed to be a UC home game. I'd like to know if this was actually a good decision by UC cause it certainly was a screw job to the UC fans. With UC playing at PBS this year this game would have sold out. So 65,000 x $50/ticket = $3.25M. Add in parking + concessions + merchandising and you get a number that is 5X greater than what UC is getting paid. I have no idea how much of that UC would get to keep and how much would go to Mike Brown but it certainly makes me question whether or not this was a good idea.

I don't think UC had a choice. I think it was "We will pay you 1 million to move the game to our place, or we don't play you at all and you get nothing"

2012 I believe was the game that OSU opted out of down here.

The contract, which was signed a long time ago, with OSU for the football games gave them an option to cancel the 2nd game to be played in Cincinnati, and move that game to CBus.

Parking revenue goes to the city and concession revenue to PBS.

So we get $38,000 more than Kent State.

Contracts are not worth the paper they are written on (unless you count the toilet paper people wipe with).

That is exactly the case. UC either could play the game at Ohio Stadium or fill the hole in the schedule. There was no option to keep the game at PBS.
