<2 per 100,000 people per year.
I suppose that means in this country there is someone, somewhere w/ the condition, but it's pretty uncommon.
Again, there were two outbreaks in Houston last year. Again, while there are some new developments in our community that create some concern, I'm not sure that this outbreak is connected to it. The fact that it seems to be concentrated on HIV positive persons is troubling.
There's been a new development based upon the availability of a drug that apparently prevents someone from contracting HIV even if they don't take protection (e.g., using condoms). The drug's use (Truvada) has side effects (and some potentially serious ones - such as increased likelihood of kidney damage if used permanently). That being said, the drug is very valuable (especially for after the fact exposure - you can take it AFTER you've been exposed and it keeps you from getting HIV), but the way it is being used is really, really, troubling. People, in significant numbers, have stopped using condoms. And of course those most likely to just throw the condoms away are precisely those that have already compromised immune systems (such as those already HIV positive). I'm concerned for the first time in a long time about the public health in the community. I actually spoke with one of our public health folks last week about it. He was concerned too.
I'd be careful about making sweeping statements though. The people doing the damage are not those that are getting married, working in political groups, or activists. They tend to be the barflies, the drug users, and assorted assclowns you'd never see anywhere besides the clubs. I call them the idiotic tenth (I don't even think they're that high of a percentage, but you'd be surprised at how much damage a small percentage of bad actors can do).
The most troubling thing about this outbreak is that it is the SECOND outbreak in the LGBT community in LA in 12 months. And LA is ground zero for the 'refuse to use condoms' movement. Even SF is smarter than those clowns.
But that being said, I'm not sure meningitis would be the first angel of a new hazard. I would think that Hepatitis C, D, and E and other STI's would be. Truvada (also known as PReP) does nothing to prevent those ailments.
