Even the most optimistic posters are going to have a tough time arguing that the men's basketball team and our conference affiliation status aren't absolute dumpster fires right now.

It could be worse - his predecessor did own some...until he sold it all on ebay...

Like the guy or not, when you look what's happened under his watch, JMU Athletics is much better than he found it.

Happy 20th anniversary to Jeff and thanks for everything he's done for JMU Athletics (and JMU as a whole).

RE: Jeff Bourne
Congratulations Jeff, and thank you.

I know he doesn't have full control to shape JMU athletics the way he wants, and I do think he's been a passionate force behind much of our successes.

RE: Jeff Bourne
I am a huge Jeff Bourne fan. He’s a good man and he has made a big difference at JMU. He will leave VERY BIG shoes to fill. Quality AD’s don’t grow on trees and should Jeff choose to retire at the end of his contract it will create a true pivotal moment for JMU leadership. I am grateful to Jeff for impact he has had on JMU.

More to come. The DNR indicates this is article one of a four part series on Bourne. Good stuff. The back story is always interesting to see how an individual followed the winding road to the present.

Madia did a great job with these. Very well done. Learned a lot.

We are fortunate to have had Bourne as long as we have. He's done an excellent job. Glad we have him for 3 more years.

RE: Jeff Bourne
No secret on here that I am a huge Jeff Bourne and Charlie King fan. That combination has been a winner for JMU. I have no idea who replaces these two when they leave but I can’t imagine being able to fill their shoes. One thing is for sure, whoever steps into their roles will step into them with JMU athletics far ahead of where it was when those two came to JMU. The table is set for the next person up.

Great articles. For those of us that know Jeff personally, we already know what a great family man he is and the strong marriage he has with Mary Lou. The saying that behind every great man is an even greater women comes to mind when reading Madia’s pieces. Mary Lou is a strong, intelligent women and someone else I also admire.

I am going to be sad when Jeff retires. It will be just like when Uncle Ron and Dean Ehlers retired. A true changing of the guard.

RE: Jeff Bourne
King was quoted in the article about the unique reporting structure & how athletics runs through him due to JMU’s need to build facilities. Will that structure change to a more traditional one as he & JB retire?

I certainly hope so. I’ve never seen another university where it’s athletic director didn’t report to the president.

The reasoning behind that reporting structure also doesn’t add up. Somehow other universities still build facilities.
