You are better off flying Air-Tran from Atlanta and staying off site. You can still get tickets to the event. That said I think I may be spending my money going to FAU and spend the rest of the week in Key West. A hell of a lot cheaper and it's not during Thanksgiving.
I was fully planning on going...then my sister announced her wedding, which will cut into my vacation availability (I'm not happy about it). Still may go.
I know a couple people that went last year and said it was outstanding. They also said that Kansas was the only team that seemed to have much of a fan representation there

Do you not like your sisters fiancé?
If married, you could always plan a "second" honeymoon to Atlantis around the same time as the tournament... Your own marriage trumps a sibling's (and gets you out of the "no comment about my sis' fiancé" crowd).
I missed the 2nd half of the UAB - Houston game at Legion Field several years back due to the fact that I had to go to my nephew's wedding that was planned on that day because Alabama wasn't playing.
It totally sucked. UAB won in a shootout against Houston as I was listening to it via headset at a wedding.

Did you have Ruth Chris for breakfast, lunch, and dinner? I can see dishing $75 a day but $150 seems to be just a tad bit high. And I have been to the Bahamas as recently as two years ago and didn't spend that kind of money. Granted I didn't stay at Atlantis either but for three days I may have spent $250-$275 on food and that was for two people. And two of those nights were dinner at a very nice hotel restaurant.
Yeah, you definitely weren't at the Atlantis.
Their standard meal plan is $139 a day per person not including gratuities and other stuff. It is not your typical Bahamas place. Mucho dinero.
Wow. Well screw that. That's ridiculous! Guess I will be watching on TV....lol

Airfare is not the issue. I also checked other hotels on the island and found some between $75.00 and $150. You don't have to stay at the resort.
Did you happen to look it up on a Holiday to get comparable rates? Random dates in June aren't the same as Thanksgiving.
July 4th weekend would probably be a better comparison.
No as I stated I basically did it on a whim. I'm sure some rates change. I figured I would leave it up to the individual that was traveling. My point was it's cheaper to fly Air Tran out of Atlanta and cheaper to NOT stay at the resort and not to eat at the resort. While the prices I quoted may go up a little it will still be considerably cheaper than the other prices.
FWIW with Air-Tran / Southwest & Spirit, just because it is a holiday does not necessarily mean fares will be more expensive if you purchase in advance. Being a frequent flyer of both I have received some pretty sweet deals purchasing in advance. If you wait until the last minute fares will be more as with any date.

I fly almost exclusively Southwest if I can. Best fares out there and 2 checked bags free.

Their meal plan also doesnt include lunch.
The lower tier meal plan is $89/person/day.
Correct. That $89 per day excludes you from the nice restaurants on site (that do have good food,) leaving you to choose from the equivalent of Olive Garden & Golden Coral type places. It also still leaves you on the hook for lunch and snacks. Say you want a bottle of water, that costs you $8. Say you want one of the yummy smoothies they sell poolside, $18. The Waterpark is nice, but the lockers (which are pretty much required) start at $9 for one to small to put anything in, and quickly escalate. Want internet access? $21 per day. Want to use the workout room? $20 per day. Want to escape Atlantis and go into town for cheaper, better food? $60 round trip cab ride that takes 15 minutes each way.
If you want to go, stay at one of the other resorts. There is a Sandals nearby that is a lot nicer and actually all inclusive. Check the Wyndham resort too.
I have been looking online, and there are a lot of reasonable deals elsewhere. Atlantis is nice and all, but like everybody else is stating here, it's expensive. I found a flight and hotel that are all inclusive, and nearby for about $1200 per person.(for the 26-30 of November) It says this includes, food(some restrictions, would have to call about those I guess), drinks(alcoholic as well), and all taxes, gratuities, and resort fees.(on cheapcaribbean.com) The cheap airlines don't even have flights listed that far out yet, so those prices could even drop. Obviously, tickets to the games and travel costs on the island would still be a factor, but I think it's much cheaper than the UAB option when you factor in the food, flight, and drinks.
*I just checked, and this is somewhere between 10-15 miles away. That's probably about 20-30 minutes from Atlantis, so you can estimate travel costs from there. For those who also don't know, you should work out a price in advance for travel, as taxis aren't always consistent in what they charge on the island.

This may seem stupid, but are you sure you can go to games if you aren't staying on site?
Since the whole point of the scam is to attract fans to stay at thie place, it seems they would take steps to make sure they did. If not, why would any one stay there and pay those prices.
If it is held at their facility, I suppose they could limit the tournament to exclusive for their guests only. It sounds ridiculous, but I would make sure before I went.
