RE: UAB's Jerod Haase on playing Auburn, Bruce Pearl: 'We would love it'
I always enjoyed watching UAB against Auburn. One year, I rode down to Auburn for the road game, the year George Wilkerson, Frank Haywood, Carter Long, Reginald Allen, Clarence Thrash, and Robert Shannon were Seniors. The UAB team was so disciplined in the first half, they had Zero Turnovers in the first Half, and were ahead by 14, as I recall, at halftime. Wilkerson had a bad cold, but had to guard Wesley Person for the entire game. I think Person still managed to score at least 25 points. UAB won on the road, at Auburn, that year. That was a great game.

Score at least 25??????
Try 44. Person holds the record in that game as the most points ever scored against UAB by a single player

I was there. Person scored 34 in second half. I think we were up 19 at half. Auburn had a tough time getting it across half court in the first half. I remember thinking this game is over. Lol. Auburn actually took a lead late but we faught back and held on to win. This is the game that coach Bartow told a NBA scout, who was there to watch Person, that Wilkerson would shut him down. Bartow told that story for years and would always laugh telling it.

In the '89 game we played down there before the 1st Iron Bowl in Auburn.

We won by about 10 and had a thousand or so UAB fans compared to about 3 or 4 thousand Auburn fans maybe with thousands more enjoying the football environment outside.

That's a good compromise.

Pearl is going to want to recruit Birmingham. Charge him a tarriff

The original idea was moved in the other Bruce Pearl thread. :snob:

I feel like most on this board, I guess, and I hope this gets worked out sooner than later. Who knows how good Pearl will have Auburn in year 1, but you can get they will be better than last year, simply based on coaching. If the deal goes on 3, 4 or 5 years, Auburn will continue to get better. They will positively help our RPI, SOS, and perception. If we can beat an SEC team that will inevitably knock off a Kentucky, Florida, or other good SEC team du jour, that will reflect better on us than playing Chattanooga and Florida A&M.

That too.

It's bad enough that al.com is slobbering all over the place.

Yep. There is nothing bad about having a power conference school on the schedule for as many years as possible. Auburn is down now, so it's a good time to try and get a long term deal done.

RE: UAB's Jerod Haase on playing Auburn, Bruce Pearl: 'We would love it'
It remains to be seen how much clout the new AU BBHC has in making decisions about playing instate D1 teams.

I don't really believe the Bama BBHC has any personal objections to playing UAB, but like with the decision to block Knox's transfer to UAB, all the decisions about UAB come from "above my head". (Was that decision made by the same guy who in his last days apparently made clear "Any hospital but UAB"?)

Perhaps the administration leaders at AU will have a more agreeable outlook to restarting the UAB vs AU series. It would be good for state basketball awareness in the general public.
