" I think it's what the fans enjoy and I'm going to play some mid-majors, but UAB is not a mid-major. UAB is what I consider a high mid-major program in a high mid-major league. ... Their RPI will be important."
Q: You've talked about wanting to schedule tough out of conference. What about in-state teams? Would you be willing to play UAB? (Auburn and UAB haven't played since they met four straight years between the 1995-96 and 1999-2000 seasons, with two games at Auburn, one at UAB and one at the BJCC Arena in Birmingham.)
"Yeah, I'd love to play UAB. I haven't studied it. My first reaction is yeah. In the nonconference, you send your players a message on how you perceive your program and if you schedule a weak nonconference schedule, you're telling your players I don't think you're very good and we need to get a few wins because it's going to be tough in the SEC. I don't believe in that. ... I was on the phone this morning with (SEC Associate Commissioner) Mark Whitworth and explained I only have one game on my schedule. One. I've got a lot of work to do."
Q: In your mind, is there a benefit to play in-state teams out of conference?
"At Tennessee, I played Middle Tennessee. I played Tennessee-Chattanooga. I played East Tennessee State. I played Belmont. I played Lipscomb. I think playing in-state helps build the quality of basketball in the state. I think it's what the fans enjoy and I'm going to play some mid-majors, but UAB is not a mid-major. UAB is what I consider a high mid-major program in a high mid-major league. ... Their RPI will be important. Why did I play Belmont? Because Belmont played a tough nonconferece schedule. If there's an in-state school that wants to play but plays a weak schedule, I can't play them because of what it will do to our RPI."

Well, it's nice to see that your allegiance is so fickle. Would your name change to "BAMANBLAZERNBARNERFAN"?
NO!! I acknowledge that Pearl won the press conference / pep rally, but I want to see something that indicates he can make a genuine difference in state collegiate basketball. As UAB fans can attest, we have seen a coach win his opening press conference before and then not be able to make a difference in results for his first two years. That's not fickle -- that's waiting for real results to judge by. We have seen the "flash", now we wait for the "sizzle".
Please note that I hope Pearl does make basketball more relevant in the state because that will be good for UAB's program as well.
Pearl has won everywhere he's been. There is nothing that indicates he won't be able to do that at Auburn as well.
McGee was all talk. He thought he was too good for UAB, and thought he'd just waltz in and move on.
Big difference. And no, we don't want Auburn to be ****. The mere hire of Pearl already hampers our recruiting. We were outrecruited by Bama this year(we lost the recruiting battle to them 3-1 I think) and the last thing we need is another program to have to fight with. I hope UAB really turns a corner this year, because we are going to need a lot of wins moving forward to win guys like Lee.

He makes sense and is straight forward. If Auburn continued 200+ in the rpi it wouldnt make sense for us to play them, but as his past scheduling philosophy proves they won't be anymore.
They are going to upgrade talent and scheduling. Im not holding my breath on a home and home or tournament getting done but i think he is the only in state sec coach in the last 10 years that could get it done or even cared to get it done. If he can get them to being a top 25 team they will worship and let him do whatever he wants. Which may spell trouble with his personality and ego.

My guess is Pearl will be at Auburn for 2 years max. I see Pastner taking a job with less pressure in about the same time, likely resulting in Pearl to Memphis.

If Pastner's looking for something low pressure, then he should just swap with Pearl now.

I agree, but 2.5 million dollars isn't easy to walk away from.

No one should. He's a proven liar and a philanderer. Only an idiot would trust this guy.
Which explains why he's now coaching at Auburn.

Which also explains why Scarbinsky & al.com love him.

To be fair, having Bruce Pearl come to the state is for a sports writer and his media outlet like a gold miner striking a "mother lode". He is a walking, talking quote machine in a sport that generally garners little attention in Alabama. Add to that the fact that Scarbinski LOVES basketball and wants our state to love it too.
