What makes 1965 the "modern era"? Seems like a date cherry picked to get over the decade when the PCC collapsed and reformed as the Pac 5, 6 and 8.

Yeah, I'd say 1982 and OU vs NCAA BOR is the real start of the modern CFB era

Though I guess you could say 1965 would be at the start of the integration era

Wouldn't the early 90's and the beginning of the BCS era be the beginning of the "modern era" as independents basically disappeared by 1992.

That's also when unlimited substitution came in, when the Vietnam War and boomers swelled the enrollment of the state schools and the year after a service academy last challenged for a national title (Navy under Roger Staubach in 1964 Cotton Bowl). Also the Ole Miss/Minnesota/Navy group disappears from the top 10 and it starts looking pretty typical for today-USC, Texas, Notre Dame, Alabama, Nebraska, Michigan, Ohio St.

Well, by that logic, this coming year would be the beginning of true modern college football as it will be the first one with a four team playoff.

I think 1965 is used because of integration reasons. To me, that's as good an arbitrary starting point as any.

1982 would be the last phase of the 1A - 1AA split too.
