“This is not a big kumbaya party for four days,” said Eddie Moore Jr., who founded the annual conference 15 years ago while studying for a doctorate in education at the University of Iowa. “We get into some really tough stuff.”

The conference, which runs Wednesday through Saturday at Monona Terrace, tackles racism that is embedded in systems and organizations — structural privilege that has evolved over centuries and that people with good intentions might not even be aware of, said Moore, director of diversity at Brooklyn Friends School, a college preparatory school in Brooklyn, N.Y.

This year’s conference likely will be its largest, with nearly 2,400 people expected, said Abby Ferber, director of The Matrix Center for the Advancement of Social Equity and Inclusion at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, which helps put on the conference.

The conference is sold out, although a few tickets may be available Thursday morning at Monona Terrace, she said. A list of free events in the community related to the conference can be found at http://www.ywcamadison.org/WPCevents.

Quote:It is correct that some taxpayer-funded institutions are paying for employees to attend. The city of Madison, a co-host at $1,500, will be sending about 40 employees to all or part of the conference, said spokeswoman Katie Crawley.

She did not have a total cost figure, as the money is being spent out of the training budgets for various departments and some employees are sharing registrations. The city received a volume discount, she said.

The cost of early registration for K-12 teachers and nonprofit staff members was $230, not including lodging, according to the conference website.

Full-price registration for individuals was $365

Oh joy!!! A conference to bash the white man and how he has kept minorities (and gay people) down. I'm sure there'll be some good ole Republican and conservative bashing there too. A fun time for all, and for some its even free...well, at least the taxpayer will pay.

People who see their rights as originating from groups ... and not as being individual rights.

If this country transitions from individual rights to collective rights ... it is doomed.

Everybody, white people included, would be better focused on bad managers and administrative inefficiencies than they would on "White Privilege."
