RE: Dr. Guy Bailey Appears To Be A No-brainer Choice for UofM President!!!
What a refreshing change of pace! Insertion of the OCS issue in the hiring of Rudd as president.

As for the rankings it wasn't exactly a scientific process. It was an open survey so anyone could vote whether they had ever heard any of the candidates speak.

Rudd was given the task by Martin to cut the budget and realign priorities on campus. Some of that process infringed on archaic practices in higher education that ignore good fiscal management. It also included some issues about customer service which has been a conversation I have had with several senior administrators.

You think there is just a small possibility that the man who has doing what he was told to do and did it well could have made some enemies on campus? Doing what any of the other candidates would have been forced to do?

I trust the selection committee. I trust dean Ranta. I wonder if Bailey (a candidate that I was intrigued with) was so good why has he not been hired in at least five other college searches that were not considered anywhere close to Tech or Bama jobs he once held?

Heck the survey picked the Charleston candidate over Rudd and no sane person felt he was a good fit or capable of doing the job in a University like ours.

Rudd was not the sexy pick here. But he is solid, has proven he can manage at a high level, can raise money, and had Martins full support and personal endorsement. Although he was not hired as the replacement of SR what we may have lucked into a real jewel to lead the transformation of the Univ of Memphis to the next level.

Or we can fight him every step of the way and make his job impossible by somehow tying him to the OCS. That would make a lot more sense.

Just curious, you said that he has proven that he could raise money. When did he do that? What money has he raised?

A message must be missed here. I was only bringing up the OCS matter as it was one similar to this in that the Heery study was made and it recommended several sites that the OCS could be constructed. After the report, Shirley simply ignored it and did not even put the whole report out for all to see and comment on. The decision was made not to even recognize the report, hence the middle finger to all that wanted it. Why have a study and why have a survey for President, if they were not going to be followed and/or even discussed. Those were the parallels that I was trying to make.

I hope Dr. Rudd will have a good tenure leading the University to bigger and better things. I bet he does. He was selected and endorsed by Brad Martin to do just that. It had nothing to do with POLITICAL POLITICS, as one has tried to suggest on this thread.

That's it.

Don't misunderstand the comparison between the OCS and the Dr. Rudd matter. The reason for the subject was to point out that even with the feasibility of having an OCS, the decision was already determined by Shirley that no matter what the OCS study said, the OCS was not going to happen. In the end she got caught up in emails to the home owner's association asking for support to defeat the stadium. Dr. Rudd, of course, had NOTHING to do with the OCS. He was not even here. Remember Harold Byrd was furious that why should we have done the study, if it was going to be ignored in the first place

I would not dismiss Dr. Rudd in any way. I hope that he is received by all parties and leads the university to bigger and better things. Apparently Brad Martin believes he will. It was his support and NOT POLITICS that moved Dr. Rudd to his position.

If the dissenters are disappointed... so be it. Get with the new President of The University of Memphis. Let's go forward.

The OCS issue is so inflammatory and frequently inserted into random conversations that it taints the conversation even if innocently applied.

Thanks for your clarification.

The OCS study was the VERY first thing that crossed my mind when I heard they hired Dr. Rudd. Why go through the dog and pony show when the decision is already made?

You too? The process was legitimate. Frankly I find it refreshing that the hiring was done based on who the selection chose After extensive interviews and background review and not based on people responding to a survey. Many of whom had never heard any of the candidates speak or responded based on personal agendas rather than what is best for the university.

Rudd may be a great president or an average one or a flop. But his selection was based on the belief he is the best man for the job.

Although I was a vocal supporter of Bailey, I agree and recognize that there are undoubtedly many facts that I did not know. Selecting leaders on the basis superficial information and public popularity is how we ended up with Larry Porter (fine man, but an utter failure).

It is a good thing having an ALUM with a lot on the line supporting our new President .. an Alum who is good friends with the richest man in Memphis and the richest family in East TN -- and friends with the current Governor ...

Just so it is clear; I am behind him 100% no matter how he got there.

No, his reputation is not on the line. Good gracious, why does everything have to rise to the level of extreme. I think BM has an intact rep no matter how Rudd does.

But you do bring up an interesting question about the wealthiest people in Memphis. Anybody have a Top 10 list?

Unlike out-of-town-owned The Commercial Appeal, which never misses an opportunity to sensationalize at UofM's expense when it might sell a few more papers, The Memphis Flyer, to their credit, has always seemed to appreciate the enormous value and importance of the university to our community and consistently shown it with positive coverage. Here is their story on our new president: http://www.memphisflyer.com/NewsBlog/arc...-president

When was the last time that Memphis hired a president from within?

Even though he has only been here a year?

Man you are over reacting.. Of course Martin's ENTIRE reputation is not on the line .. but the fact is that people know that Martin picked Rudd, Brad spent a lot of time and effort here 'getting a lot of things straight' and he does not want to see his efforts fall apart.

Just by taking the interim job and letting it become known that he was actively managing the overall university Brad Martin put his stamp on the University and has a lot at stake here.

I think in general BM's impact has been sensationalized And overestimated. I'm happy and proud for his sacrifice and willingness to spend the better part of a year leading the university. He wasn't afraid to actual have an impact as an interim. He tossed out a lot of ideas of which some where good and some were disruptive to the work.

Apparently Rudd was the work behind the idea and Rudd was guy that engineered the budget restructuring. Whether Rudd will be judged a good president or not will be written over years. But in no way will BMs rep take a hit based on Rudd's performance. BM is an obscenely successful businessman and philanthropist who did something special for his university. Period. It is Disingenuous to place the burdon of Rudd's success on BMs shoulders. What purpose does it serve?

Obviously I am not making my point,On this board, it was brought up by some that being picked by Haslam/Martin made Rudd a puppet for those looking to 'keep us down' My point is that Martin has every reason to pick a successor that will thrive and helping that successor when he can .. having a very successful man in our corner who helped pick Rudd is a good thing..

If you would have said that in the first place without the "rep one the line" comment it would have been a good thing.

And the puppet comments are idle chatter by small minds looking for self-inflated status in the anonymous world of message boards.
