"Memphis is an Antsy Team"
...according to Steve Lappas.

And Virginia plays extremely slooooowwwww.

VA is 346th in tempo out of of 351 Division 1 teams, according to Pomeroy:

Yeah. We haven't played a team to date this season who has as good of a defense as UVA. As far as dictating the pace.... If the game is in the low 60s, we have a slim to none chance of winning the game and slim left town.

So, if they get behind, we'll run away with the game. I think we'll win.

They looked pretty beatable last night. Coastal woke up and said "holy crap! We are winning!" More than Virginia woke up and said "holy crap! We are behind!" Coastal started playing tight and nervous. We might not win, but we can win.

I think they are the kind of team that tends to give us the most trouble. We just have to try and dictate the speed of the game. Hope we are on in the shooting department, especially with free throws. Anyway, I'll be cheering win or lose! Go Tigers!

If UVA is as hot from ft and from 3 as they were last night, they'll be tough. Zero offensive rebounds is amazing, however.

According to Pomeroy, we've played several top 20 defenses this year:

Zags: 16
UConn: 14(3)
SMU: 11(2)
Cincy: 9(2)
UL: 6(2)
FL: 2

VA is ranked #4

I updated this this when I realized I left out our non-conference schedule.

11 of our 32 games were against top 20 defenses prior to last night.

By comparison, only three of our games were against top 20 offenses.

IMO, if we can hit our 3's we will be in good shape. If not, we have to slow down somewhat and we don't play as well. Got to have CC and Dixon hitting those shots.

I agree that uva looked beatable. However, I believe uva did ratchet up their defensive intensity, and that had a lot to do with CC playing nervous.

Got to keep the TOs under control ... fewer possessions. Did Virginia look small to anyone else or was I just missing it ?

Before too much lumping goes on- in the they are tough so they will of course give MEMPHIS problems- the reality is they are tough- and tough teams give everyone problems.

They lost 6 games:

VCU 18
Wisconsin 6 (lost 48-38!)
@ Green Bay 64
@ utk- they lost badly- it happens
@ Duke 10
@ Maryland 76

Wins over:
SMU 51
@ Florida State 53
@ NC State 54 (drilled them)
Fl State 53
NC 23
@ Pitt 37 (won 48-45)
Maryland 76
@ Clemson 71
Syracuse 15 (beat them pretty good- this was the game that elevated them into the big picture nationally)
Fl State 53
Pitt 37 (51-48)
Duke 10

RE: "Memphis is an Antsy Team"
They are 5-5 against the top 50
8-2 against 51-100, or 13-6 against the top 100

Memphis is 5-7 against the top 50
2-1 against 51-100, or 7-8 against the top 100

The middle and bottom of the ACC afforded them more top 100 games where the bottom of the AAC did not afford Memphis the same.

Their biggest wins clearly Syracuse, NC and Duke (yesterday's loss notwithstanding).
Our biggest wins are Louisville, Gonzaga and GW- although WHEN we beat OK State they were at full strength- still had Cobbins and were not playing in the aftermath of the big losing streak and Marcus Smart's suspension.

Yes- they play strong defense- which makes it more difficult for ALL their opponents. Yes they have struggled to score. Yes we have laid some eggs. Yes we have played well against really good teams.

We can win without it being a fluke. We can lose handily without it being a fluke.

RE: "Memphis is an Antsy Team"
Virginia the best defensive team in the country?

based on what? Playing no one OOC and the good to decent teams they did they lost too or were in close games with. Then played in an overrated ACC?

UNC should have lost last night too.

Syracuse and Pitt have looked the best from that conference and they just got there.

Virginia won by 3 @ Pitt and Beat Syracuse but at home. They didn't even have to play them on the road.

They could very well beat us, but I don't see and I haven't seen a single thing that makes me scared.

The only thing they are #1 in is points allowed.

Everything else for their entire team based on team rankings is in the 100's-250's.

Coastal plays such an awkward game, it was hard to tell much about Virginia other than the big shots they hit down the stretch

Note: Everyone beat Syracuse near the end of the season. They started 25-0 finished 28-5. Going 3-5 in their last 8 and mostly against subpar competition. They simply caught Syracuse at the right time.

Which normally doesn't happen back to back. Especially if the Tigers play defense like they did last night. Sure their bigs were driving on us, Nichols isn't as good as he is going to be yet. However, look at the threes they had maybe what 2 wide open? Crawford was playing Defense in front of his man and hustling all night.

Guard the three and rebound we win this game.
