Braun (EDIT: Resigns) at Rice
http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketba...-ben-braun

As I suggested in another thread, Braun's fate was almost certain.

LaMonta Stone's HC, Orr, was non-extended at BG.

And Andy Moore's HC is likely to be fired at Va Tech.

Tough month for former EMU hoop coaches.

RE: Braun fired at Rice
It's really too bad. He's a good man and a good coach.

Even good coaches need to be in good circumstances. Look at Bobby Knight. He did very well at all three of his stops. At Texas Tech he had some good teams and they vastly improved, but he never won a league title. There are very few coaches who will succeed no matter where they are.

Well, technically, he resigned. But that was probably more of a face-saver than anything. Too bad. I think all of us here have fond memories of Ben and wished the best for him in his post-EMU career.

I think Murphy could be a candidate to replace JB at Syracuse when he decides to retire, whenever that might be.

Yep, you heard it here first.

Agree, both he and Gary Waters made one big mistake:

I really don't like coaches who have staked ground in one region of the country and move to another.

Much of success in college hoops is recruiting and moving to another part of the country means establishing recruiting roots.

I don't believe Waters ever got recruiting done successfully at Rutgers.

He tried relieving a coach, Kevin Heck, to go for someone who could recruit NYC and that never succeeded.

Put Gary back in the Midwest and he has done quite well.

Ben Braun in Houston???? Like why???

Too many coaches like Ron Cooper (EMU FB early 90s) play their hand moving up the coaching ladder until they finally hit the "Peter's Principle" and start heading back down it (the coaching ladder).

BTW, for those who need a recruiting fix, LaMonta Stone's son is a good one (a junior).

The crazy thing is that he is a smidge bigger than Earl Boykins. As a soph. he was listed as 5' 7", 145.

Very good player, but vertically challenged.

Wonder if Murphy will apply for the Rice job. Maybe we could just make a Braun for Murphy trade. Braun is now 60 (how did that happen?) so he may be considering retirement from the coaching profession.

He (Murphy) would be foolish to apply for a job in Houston.

He should keep his eyes focused on schools from Chicago eastward to the Atlantic Ocean (he has eastern roots from his days at 'Cuse).

P.S. and time for him to get a PAY RAISE. His salary is too low.

I just hope he doesn't start getting offers in the next month.

Add EMU alum Stan Heath to the list.

RE: Braun (EDIT: Resigns) at Rice
I didn't see Jim Boone's name mentioned so I looked him up. After EMU Boone took the job at Tusculum College where he had some good seasons, some not so good and resigned after his sixth season with a slightly better .500 record.

Then Boone took the job at West Virginia Wesleyan. He had one very good season there and then went to Delta State.

He's been at Delta State two seasons, both good years. This season the team made it to the third round of the NCAA Div II tournament before being eliminated.

It is a strange record. He's coached at multiple stops, never producing outstanding programs, but always achieving some success. The one exception is EMU where he won only about a third of his games.

If I'm not mistaken, John Bowler is an assistant on Jim Boone's current staff.

Good catch, Bowler started at Delta when Boone did. BTW, last season Delta made it to the Sweet 16.

Bowler played six seasons professionally in Germany. Here is his Delta biography.

I was thinking of Bowler during the MAC tourny. EMU had very little scoring from the post.

Bowler, Bowdry, or even Dobbins would've been perfect for this team. Someone with any form of low post scoring.
