RE: As a Georgetown fan I must say ...
I know I'm repeating this from about a year ago, but since the topic came up again...
Just want to point out to those that don't remember and those that weren't born, that Syracuse fans were ready to dump Boeheim after the 86 NCAA's. He had a stretch of 10 years where the Orangemen had talent, but couldn't get over the hump.
77 - lost to UNCC in Sweet 16 game. <-- Max here.
78 - lost to Western Kentucky.
79 - lost to Penn (who made F4 but hadn't been ranked). SU had 4-seed, Penn a 9-seed.
80 - lost to Iowa in Sweet 16 game. <-- SU a 1-seed, Iowa a 5-seed. Iowa was great, got to F4 with Ronnie Lester.
81 - missed NCAA's.
82 - missed NCAA's.
83 - lost to Ohio State in Final 32 game. <-- OSU was solid. SU had a highly-touted senior class which had won the BET at the Carrier Dome in 81, went into 82 with high expectations, and then didn't get traction in 82 or 83... the three seniors were Leo Rautins, Erich Santifer and Tony "Red" Bruin. Complete despair was avoided because of the anticipated arrival in 84 of freshman Pearl Washington.
84 - lost to Virginia in Sweet 16 game. <-- SU had 3-seed to Va's 7-seed... SU had lost BET final in OT to Georgetown, were expected to advance far, but lost to Virginia who made the F4 in 84 after Sampson had graduated.
85 - lost to Georgia Tech. <-- great team with John Salley, Mark Price and Yvon Joseph.
86 - lost to Navy <-- SU had a 2-seed, played at the Carrier Dome, but David Robinson owned Seikaly and Herman Harried... Pearl's last game... also last game for Addison and Alexis. This game was a complete disaster... I can't stress this enough, although memories of this game have been erased like Trotsky from Soviet text books... the selection committee really helped the Orangemen by placing them in the Carrier Dome. The next year I think, Pitt hired Navy's coach Paul Evans (who ended up having anger and control issues, and a gruff personality), whose future bad coaching blew Pitt's golden opportunity to make a possible F4 in the 88 NCAA's (lost to Vandy in OT in Final 32 game).
After the 86 flameout, many SU fans had enough. There were calls for his head. Luckily Boeheim stayed on and in a rebuilding year unexpectedly made the national final. Douglas took over for Pearl, and freshman Derrick Coleman was a force, but Seikaly was still as coordinated as a giraffe on roller skates.
Basically, Syracuse was the mirror image of Villanova back then...
Syracuse in the NCAA's never won a game as a lower seed, but at the same time lost 4 times where they were upset by much lower seeds (79, 80, 84, 86).
Villanova, at the same time, never lost to a lower seed in the NCAA's, and in fact had an amazing number of big upsets... from 78 thru 88, Massimino had won 1 national title (85), and had 4 other years making the Elite-8 (78, 82, 83, 88). Rollie was a genius.
