I'm not aware of any openly gay athlete or coach to ever set foot on the campus. The only openly Gay people I've heard of that have been on campus came with Soulforce (a very tame group by the way - They aren't Act Up or Queer Nation radicals). They apparently were arrested.

Do I think that I'd be arrested if I went to see USA play Liberty in Lynchburg? I doubt it, but that's the history. I'd probably just be kicked out for wearing a non-descript T-Shirt showing my membership in a LGBT affinity group.

This is absurd. Tom. Really? Kicked out? You're delusional. Virginia voted for Obama in 2012 FWIW...how did Alabama go? And please, tell your friends at Berkeley that they're in a conference with Liberty. See how far that one goes. I really want to see the response from them and whether or not they care enough to petition the AD and President to do anything about it. The answer is no - they have better things to do.

Keep living with your blinders on. Now you are changing the requirement to 'openly gay'? Talk about subjective. How do you actually define 'openly gay'? To those 6 that Cyd's inept list has on it? To think there have not been openly gay players fans officials or coaches that have set foot on campus is really being purposefully obtuse. A quick look at the opponents they have played will put rest to that. Take a look at some of the umpires and referee's. But I guess since you don't know them and they aren't wearing an OutnProud t-shirt they aren't openly gay enough for you.

And remember you were the one who unequivocally stated you were scared to come on campus because you'd be arrested. Yet you can't name any visiting spectator, player, coach or official who has experienced that. Instead you just say disingenuously that you aren't aware of any that meet your standard. Don't do any research, just hold on to your irrational fear.

I'm just going by LU's past treatment of people who are openly Gay. Here's what I have for LU.

1) A student handbook policy mandating sanctions for being Gay.
2) A history of arresting those who have been on campus and being openly identified as Gay
3) Employment prohibitions on any Gay employees or even for straight employees to take positions supportive of equality.
4) Administrators who advocate jailings and other extreme sanctions for persons who are Gay

On the other hand

1) A case of one student who attended Liberty, came out, and wasn't expelled (but he was basically kicked out of the dorms and didn't graduate).
2) An absence of any obvious problems at past LU athletic events, although LU's athletic partners tend to be very conservative.

LU's record is really mixed.

Again, I wish there was some common ground. But that would be assume that LU was willing to compromise. I don't think LU does compromise. I don't think they should expect others to compromise for them either.

The decision was made very late for both teams. We had to spend a couple of months fighting over teams. Apparently the meetings were awfully contentious, with teams basically saying "Take Team X and We will leave". Not necessarily over LU either.

I challenge to to rebut any of my assertions regarding Mat Staver, LU's student handbook policies, LU's employee requirements, or the events that took place when Soulforce came to LU's campus. You are also welcome to show any evidence of LU welcoming openly Gay persons to campus. Or point out any Jewish employees. You might not like the picture of LU that I'm painting, but no one has presented any evidence from the schools policies or events that contradicts the picture.

I get that LU's students aren't all a bunch of knuckle dragging homophobes, but the administration appears to act like that caricature.

By the way, Staver is toxic. It is rather difficult to believe the absence of pure malevolence from an institution that condones and forwards Mat Staver's advocacy. But JFJ apparently thinks that Staver is A-OK, I suppose.

Where there problems reported due to the controversial nature of Liberty? Did school Prez or school officials express concerns in the local media? Basically, what were the experiences of teams that played LU. As LU has recently played played ODU, NCState, WFU, WVU, JMU and in the past App State, these fans are the best to either confirm, or reject the fears and thoughts expressed on this board. Due to the volatility of those for and against LU, please only reply if you attended a home game against LU, and are not a LU fan.

I fail to see how the treatment of a very small sample of visiting fans to LU for a basketball game would prove or disprove any fit concerns regarding employment discrimination within the athletic department at LU on the basis of sexual orientation and religion, questions as to the freedom of athletes to speak out, questions as to the motivation of LU for seeking admission to the Sun Belt, questions as to LU's ability to compromise with others as part of a group, and issues related to the administration that enables advocacy of the worst human rights abuses imaginable.

I, for one, would NOT feel welcome on a campus that simply arrests visitors to campus because they are Gay and advocate, quietly for Gay acceptance and inclusion.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/2006/03/10/...niversity/

Is this what would happen to me if I showed up at LU-USA tilt wearing a Association of Gay Jaguar Fans T-shirt? Would I be arrested? Would I be told "no you can't wear that shirt or sit in an identifiable group". By the way, we do have a group. And we do go to away games. We don't have shirts. Yet. And no..we don't call ourselves the Miss Pawla's. Although I don't know why USA dropped her.

For the record, I've been to Lynchburg. I wouldn't set foot on your campus. I know I'm not welcome. Nor are any other Gay persons. Some LU people like to bring up the case of someone who is apparently Gay but who wasn't kicked out for being Gay. I note that he was kicked out of the dorms and didn't graduate.

Here is a novel idea... LEAVE YOUR AGENDA AT HOME!

You say just leave you alone and let you live your life the way you wish. But you go out of your way to shove your agenda in other's face and then ***** and complain when you get some grief. If you truly just wanted to be left alone, you'd go to the game wearing a shirt like all other Jaguar Fans and enjoy the game. Leave the agenda at home.

Welcome to the Sun Belt. I've been a member of this community for close to 40 years as a fan, a student, and an alumni.

My agenda? Like being able to not be barred from working at a Sun Belt athletic department because I'm Gay (or Jewish, or Buddhist, or whatever )? Or being able to attend an athletic event in a group setting, where we, like the friggin' fraternities or religious groups opposed to equality, wear identifying clothing?

And yes, if LU has high ranking administrators advocating/cheerleading legislation to throw me and every member of my group in prison for the crime of existing, then I have a problem with my conference providing them with a bigger platform to do so.

Comparing you showing up at Liberty wearing a shirt proclaiming your sexual preferences to folks representing their Frat or Sorority is insane. Most people could give a rat's ass about what you do behind closed doors. But you can't leave it at that can you? Noooo sir, you've got to shove in their face then play poor little me victim when someone hurts your feelings because they don't appreciate it! Furthermore, I can not believe you have turned this conversation from Liberty's qualifications for joining the Sunbelt to a forum for whining about your personal struggles. Congratulations.
Excellent point. Tom's inability to allow others to share their experiences when playing LU at home (he has not), and the reactions if any that have occurred, and his continual verbal assault on moral grounds is the pot calling the kettle black. I will give him this credit. He quotes more about LU than anyone else, and that's from LU followers, as he has facts, details, quotes, clips, articles, links to support his views. A clear obsession that is being pointed out by many non-LU fans that see the absurdity.

Tom I did a google search for -Tom in Lazybrook- in an effort to better understand your position. You are everywhere!!! What I discovered was a pattern. You seem to distort facts to hurt those you dislike? Here are a couple of quotes I stumbled accross from others you've attacked.

Quote:Tom in Lazybrook is a bigot and a hypocrite, of whom is using his vindictive agenda to eradicate ALL Jamaicans off of the face of this planet. Tom has craftily fabricated stories of what happens in Jamaica, and has passed it on as fact to the impressionable masses that would like to know about Jamaica. Tom is fascinated with gathering several clips of news about negative occurrences in Jamaica, and he broadcasts them as his examples of hate crimes that he claims are happening at such an alarming rate, that he is convinced that a ritual genocide of homosexuals is being carried out in Jamaica this very moment by every heterosexual resident of Jamaica, and he wishes you to believe that also! When challenged to produce his facts of genocide in Jamaica, or to even answer simple questions, as I have in the past forums where Tom in Lazybrook has contributed slanderous statements of Jamaica, Tom could not be bothered to answer them!

Quote:People are slowly dismissing you as a bigot, a spreader of slanderous and false comments against Jamaica and its people, and an idiot. How do you feel now, Tom? Nobody is interested in joining your forums of hate anymore. I applaud these people...maybe now it will force you to abandon your ignorant ways .....

Tom I can assure you that no one I attend football games with has anything but love for you. I will warn you though, if I set beside you at a LU-ASU game someday I will not be loving ASU that day!

Maybe the 28 full/part-time law school faculty, and the 58 full-time law students all go to games with Staver. And maybe they all skip and sing anti gay songs while holding hands. But out of the entire LU Academic staff of around 1,838, Undergraduate students around 12,600 and Postgraduate students around 5,814 I'm thinking Staver doesn't have as much influence as you might think 03-razz

Again, he's still there and still the Law School Dean. And still making comments supportive of criminalization statutes. If it is such a minor part of LU, then perhaps LU could help direct its Law School Dean as to expectations regarding public speaking and issue advocacy from a University Division leader at a school that reserves the right to regulate the initimate details of the lives of its employees.

I truly wish that Mat Staver had no influence. Unfortunately, he does. And we feel that it is resulting in human rights abuses. Extreme ones. Staver's advocacy is going to look increasingly worse as time goes on.

With regards to my accusations regarding Liberty, I challenge you to show where

1) Mat Staver did not endorse/cheerlead criminalization statutes. I can provide more audio files of him talking on the radio about it.
2) LU's student handbook does not hold penalties for Gay persons in relationships. You can look up the LU student handbook yourself.
3) LU's employment practices do not prohibit Gays (and Jews) from employment. I've also provided that.

I get that many LU students are not knuckledragging homophobes. I just can't resolve LU's membership with Staver's advocacy. And I don't like the employment discrimination either (that's a real pet peeve of mine). I don't think LUPD would arrest me for wearing an affinity Tshirt to a LU game. I think I might be harassed by them though.

Way off topic on the J'ca stuff, but the Huffington Post and Time Magazine agree with me on that http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/30...44356.html and http://content.time.com/time/world/artic...91,00.html . But you are free to look up 7 or 8 year old blog posts to cherrypick.

You really have no clue do you Tom?

That is all I have for openly Gay people on the LU campus. Perhaps there's other examples of openly Gay people being on campus. I'm not aware of them.

I don't really care about any of this. If someone is gay good for them, whatever makes them happy is all that matters. I understand what you are trying to say but activists coming onto our campus is not the same thing as an openly gay student or sports fan.

Wow. Imagine if LU had a branch campus in Jamaica!

The Fox article he posts is clearly meant to be deceptive by him. He leads you to believe that the Fox link tells a story of people being arrested on Liberty's campus because they were/are gay. The actual truth of it is they were arrested for Trespassing. Big difference
He says he feels it would be 'unsafe' for him to attend a game at LU, based in some part, he'd like you to believe because of the article he posts, which, again had to do with trespassing. So when asked to come up with other situations where any visiting player, fan, coach or official was arrested on Liberty's campus for being gay, he can't. Instead he tries to misdirect by saying there are only '6 openly gay players' at the NCAA level. When pushed he admits there are more but they are not 'openly gay'. He does not define what makes one 'openly gay'. He further misdirected by setting Staver up as a boogeyman by posting some outrageous quotes. Then tries to tie Staver to Barber. Yet when asked to provide a quote to establish a Barber/Staver link, he can't.

The truth is simple. Despite all of the crazy quotes posted, the cold hard SIMPLE real fact is that if TOM came to a game he would not be arrested. Facts prove this. Because despite what he posts, what inferences he tries to make, people are not arrested on Liberty's campus for being gay. Period.

Interesting quote from JFJ in there:

Quote:Falwell, the university's chancellor, had warned the group that it would not be permitted on campus, saying he would not allow his school to be used for a media event aimed at raising money for gay rights.

"Neither will we permit them to espouse opinions or otherwise suggest beliefs or lifestyles that are in opposition to the morals and values that this institution promotes," he said in a statement issued earlier.

Seems like that is precisely what Tom is saying: He doesn't want your university to espouse opinions or otherwise suggest beliefs or lifestyles that are in opposition to the morals and values that he wants his institute to promote (in this case, an open policy where sexual orientation is not relevant to any hiring or jailing).

RE: Liberty
Tom brings up many valid points, and the anti-gay employment practices at Liberty are reason enough to not add them to our conference. Even if we ignore that huge issue (which we shouldn’t), there are plenty of other reasons to say no.

The Sun Belt is made up of public universities that are filled with all kinds of students and faculty. Every one of our schools has students and faculty that are 10 miles to the right of the average Liberty student or faculty member, and I say good for them. If you want to live your life that way, more power to you. Some of the posters on here want to turn this into a reverse discrimination issue because we don’t want to be associated with Liberty, but the problem with that is we have evangelical Christians enrolled and employed in droves throughout our conference.

Every one of the Sun Belt member institutions provides a chance for students of all religions, sexual orientations, belief structures, etc. to learn and grow as students and as people. To say that Liberty has a different mission is an understatement. Liberty is operating in a different universe then the rest of us.

Take a look at the “Liberty Way”. There are rules dictating everything from what kind of movies can be watched to what kind of charities you are allowed to support. There are rules about how your hair should be cut. This is a university made up of mostly 18-22 year old adults, yet they are treated like 10 year olds and can be punished for promoting anything at all that goes against the view s of the Liberty administration. I find that really offensive and I don’t want my school or my conference to do anything to support “higher education” of that nature. It goes totally against the principles and values that every one of our schools shares. It doesn’t make sense for 13 like minded public schools with similar visions and goals (like educating students of all different religions and beliefs) to add 1 private school that treats its students like little kids and says “believe what we tell you or you can be fined and punished”. Liberty would make every one of our schools look bad.
