So you mean you can't see Russia from Palin's backyard?

Come on, are you really that stupid? I thought everyone knew by now that it was Tina Fey that said that on SNL. What Palin said was that you could see Russia from Alaska, which is true.

All that matters to the liberal is that someone who looked kind of like Palin said it. That's all they needed, they get their politics from comedy shows...

So then it is true? Thank goodness. I was getting worried for Palin.

Of course it's true. You're a teacher aren't you? Don't you have world map or globe in your classroom?

03-lmfaoI don't know of any history teacher that still has world maps or globes in their room.

Anyway, I realize that the Bering Strait narrowly separates parts of Alaska and Russia. I do not know however if you really can see one side from the other.

Anyhow, I was being sarcastic. Some of you guys really should lighten up. 03-lmfao

Sarcasm is difficult to identify within written comments (see http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10...3796519732 ). Furthermore, you have a reputation for calling people stupid and ignorant, so why should anyone conclude you are being sarcastic.

As for the "...see Russia.." issue, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diomede_Islands, which describes in detail the visual proximity of Alaska to Russia. In short, Little Diomede Island (Alaska) is 2.5 nautical miles from Big Diomede (Russia), within the visual nautical horizon.

Finally, I am saddened that school rooms no longer have world maps posted. Google Earth is great, but a map is a visual that ties everything together.

I have never called anyone stupid. I generally call ideas or events stupid but not people.

Calling someone ignorant however simply means that they don't know or are unaware.

I hope at one time there were Soviet and American soldiers staring at one another with steely eyes across the cold waters.

Awesome! I take fashion advice from 1/2 term governors all the time so this thread is perfect.

There actually were observation posts on both islands at the height of the Cold War. Can you imagine spending 8 hours every day, looking through a pair of binoculars and seeing a guy looking at you with a pair of binoculars.

We just couldn't afford them anymore. A good set of maps cost around 2000 dollars and they have a shelf life of about 5 years. We have 6 history teachers on my campus so we were looking at about 12k every 5 years.

I get what you are saying however. Our kids are sorely lacking in geography skills.

One year I had a kid ask " Why is Alaska so cold and Hawaii so hot if they are right next to each other?"

Last year, I had to stop my lesson and teach my students which way rivers flowed.

How much where those badass physical topographic maps, where you would run your fingers over mountains and hills?

It depends. The last one's we bought were a group showing the U.S. at different times in History.
