RE: program building
ALL successful revenue producing programs at the D1 level require $$$$$$$$$ and lots of them.

THAT is the lesson the article makes abundantly clear. Success on the D1 level "on the cheap" simply does not exist today, if it ever did. If a school wants the better athletes to tie their stars to its wagon, then it must show a willingness to provide the facilities to back their efforts. Planning such facilities is good - building them is better.

Money and facilities...

Why hasn't anyone thought of that?

We UAB fans have known these facts and these "secrets" for over two decades, but we have not had the $$$$$$ to back and build our athletic programs on a competitive level with our competition. No one is suddenly discovering anything - we are just continuing to state the obvious, and we continue to hope someone with $$$$$ is listening and becomes interested in helping. If any of those above had the millions to give , we would have the infrastructure for success in place today rather than only "in planning stages".

The school's revenue stream from the state will never be able to help UAB build anything more ambitious than whatever level of program is below D3 in costs (is that NAIA?). The kind of money needed in modern athletics now begins with 7 figures and goes up from there. UA and AU spend about $200,000 per athlete per year (since 2010) to play their games at their level. Each school could probably afford one athlete per year out of their own pockets at that rate. The rest has to come from (tax deductible) "charitable contributions" from those who can afford to give.
