Other Friday & Saturday games (Feb 21/22, 2014)
(Rankings according to D1baseball.com)

Nebraska thumped #1 Oregon State, 9-2, at the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge in Surprise, Ariz.

#4 Virginia squeaked past East Carolina, 3-2, in Charlottesville. Only one Pirate over the minimum came to bat in the last six innings (a single, DP & walk).

#12 NCState's ace Carlos Rodon gave up a three-run homer in T8, and the 0-5 Appalachian State Mountaineers got the tying run into scoring position against the Wolfpack bullpen in T9 in Raleigh, but the home team pulled out a 6-5 win.

A two-out, two-run rally (two-doubles & a single) in T3 propelled 4-0 Xavier to a 2-1 win over #14 (not for long at 1-3!) North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

In Stillwater, #18 Oklahoma State (6-0) scored 2 runs in B7 on one hit (walk, sac, RBI single, SB, RBI sac fly) to sneak by Oakland, 3-2, in the Grizzlies' first game of the year.

Two Sacramento State pitchers made an unearned run in T3 (E6, single, single) hold up for a 1-0 victory over the #21 Aggies in College Station's Blue Bell Park.

A 3-run T7 (three singles & a double) sealed a 6-2 win for #24 ULaLa over USM in Hattiesburg.

Florida Atlantic was the only other C-USA team to lose today, falling 5-1 to Monmouth in Boca Raton. In the Hawks' first ABs of the season, they lashed six hits (4 singles & 2 doubles, plus a walk) in T1 to plate all the runs they'd need against the Owls.

Other C-USA games:

Tulane 12-8, @LaTech
@Charlotte 6-0, Canisius
@Middle Tennessee 8-6, Dayton
Marshall 6-2, @NCarolina AT&T
@Old Dominion 3-0, St. John's
@FIU 6-2, Stony Brook
UTSA 8-3, @A&M-Corpus
@UAB 4-2, Youngstown State

Most of the teams in C-USA played some low level teams. They need to step up their schedule if they want a chance to get into the tournament.

Many of the big-conference teams play cupcakes early, too.

FYI, Canisius beat NCState & Carlos Rodon in this year's season opener. Monmouth won 30 games last year, and Stony Brook and St. John's have made post-season noise in recent years.

Long Beach (1-4) won its first game of the year, clobbering #19 Arizona State, 11-0 at Blair Field. Both teams got 7 hits, but the Sun Devils (2-3) gave up 9 walks!

Texas beats Stanford for the second time to clinch the series.

Tied 3-3 in the B9, Stanford walks 3 Texas hitters on 14 pitches, then gives up a wild pitch to end it.

Uh scores in B10 to beat Mich 1-0. To put Rice's loss to uh in perspective, uh has allowed 3 runs so far this season.

After suffering through 12 scoreless innings, the San Francisco Dons' beat #2 Cal State Fullerton, 6-5, just before midnight Friday at Fullerton on the strength Brendan Hendriks' solo homerun in T19!

Walt:

Oregon State actually lost to Nebraska yesterday - appears to be part of a Pac 12/Big 10 weekend event. They have Indiana tomorrow.

Saturday games:

In a seesaw ending, #1 Oregon State lost its second consecutive game at the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge, Surprise, Ariz., on Saturday: 8-7 to Michigan State. The game had been tied since B3 when the Spartans scored a run in T8. The Beavers answered with 2 in B8 ... and Michigan State matched that with 2 in T9. A Spartan single was wiped out with a game-ending double play.

#7 Mississippi State spilt their doubleheader with Holy Cross today -- 8-4, 6-7 -- but they won the weekend series, 2-1.

#22 Cal Poly evened its series at #10 UCLA with an 8-0 win, thanks to Slater Lee's 2-hitter.

#18 Oklahoma State scored 4 in B9, but left the bases loaded and lost the second game of today's doubleheader with the Oakland Golden Grizzlies (not the A's), 10-7. The Cowboys won the first game, 10-4, and the series, however.

#19 Arizona State lost its second game of the weekend, this time at UC-Irvine, 5-2. Both Sun Devil runs were unearned.

With 8-5 & 9-5 wins today, #24 ULaLa completed its sweep of Southern Miss in Hattiesburg.

USF beat #29 Oklahoma, 4-1, in Orlando. The Sooners gifted the Golden Kinghts' victory margin in B4, as USF scored 3 runs (and left the bases loaded) on two singles, 3 HBPs, a walk and a wild pitch.

#30 Kentucky beat Old Dominion, 7-5, in Norfolk. The Wildcats scored the final 3 runs with two outs in T7 on a solo home run and a single, two walks and a 2-RBI single.

Other C-USA scores:

@Virginia, 4-0 ECU (UVa clinched series, 2-0)
Tulane smashed LaTech, 16-3, in Ruston to clinch the series, 2-0.
UTSA beat BYU, 7-1, in a tournament in Corpus Christi.
A single/bunt-single/single scored the winning run in B12 as @Charlotte beat Canisius, 4-3. (Charlotte clinched series, 2-0.)
Marshall lost @NC A&T, 8-7, in B12.
@Middle Tennessee overcame a 3-0 (T3 deficit at home to beat Miami (Ohio), 4-3.
@FAU beat Monmouth, 4-0, to even their series.
@FIU blanked Stony Brook, 10-0 to clinch their series.
@UAB beat Youngstown State, 4-0, to clinch their series and give coach Brian Shoop his 900th victory as a head coach. (Prior to joining UAB in 2007, Shoop won 692 in 17 seasons at Birmingham Southern: 511 in NAIA, 181 in NCAA.) Chase Mallard's streak of 14 no-hit innings ended with a single in T8, but Cory Eller came on to preserve the 1-hitter.

They will make the top 25 (I'm guessing 22 or so) this Monday if they sweep Michigan today. Definitely off to a good start and playing quality ball.

Note to self: if my team is ranked #1, don't schedule games in a place named Surprise.
