UAB (146) plays at Charlotte (186) Saturday afternoon.

Charlotte was blown out tonight, at home, by MTSU (83) 71-49.

Charlotte is 14-11 overall, and 5-7 in C-USA.

Charlotte won a HUGE game against Michigan (18) back in November. Their worst losses were on the road at Rice (305), and at UTSA (316). They have lost four straight, and six of the last eight.

Pomeroy favors Charlotte, 74-73.

Unfortunately, our seasons seem to have mirrored each other: big wins early, crash in the conference season. However, their bad losses are BaddER than ours, and while we have been inconsistent, they have been on a major slide as of late. This one is winnable and very important for the conference tourney. We need this one!

I am going, along with another converted Blazer fan.

This is only the second away game I've been able to go to, so I'm pretty excited.

I REALLY want to go to the UNC game in Chapel Hill next year.

What does everyone think of informally changing our name from UAB to just Birmingham? Charlotte has made the informal switch from UNCC.

I think that we've spent years building the UAB brand.

I also think that nothing we say about it will matter a bit.

I don't know how Charlotte did it. They seem to have simply said we don't want to be called UNCC anymore and the media and everyone simply said OK. The media made the switch immediately. UAB has not had that kind of cooperation.

99% of the things we talk about here will not happen, but we still spend lots of time thinking about them and talking about them.

I was saying:

1. UAB is not going to change the name of the university to University of Birmingham for any number of reasons, primarily that many years and much money have been expended on building the "UAB" brand.

2. If UAB did indeed decide to do so, the same "reporters" (haaaawk, spit) who call us Alabama-Birmingham now, despite anything we say or how we protest, will then call us UAB.

3. It's a message board, and no one who makes such decisions gives a whistle what the people on a message board say about it.

However, this is a free country. If you want to call UAB "Birmingham University" or "The University of Birmingham", go to it. However, the same people who get irritated now at Alabama-Birmingham will also be unhappy with you for it and feel that you're not calling UAB by the name that the school prefers.


And, yes, smartass is something of a default position. It's just that in this case I truly don't think it will ever happen. Good idea, bad idea, I just don't see it, and that was the primary point I was making.

Birmingham has a negative connotation unlike Charlotte

In the case of Charlotte, if I understand correctly, the term "Charlotte" only refers to their athletic teams. The school is still officially called and referred to as the University of North Carolina At Charlotte, so Charlotte is almost like a nickname.

I don't think it would work for us as well…before the change, I (and I assume many others) referred to them as UNC-Charlotte. I never heard them called UNCC.
In order to argue that our transition would be similar, you'd have to assume that people know us as UA-Birmingham

They were called UNCC all the time during the Sun belt days. I remember their cheerleaders doing a cheer where they chanted U-N-C-C and formed the letters with their arms (YMCA style). They were also called UNC-Charlotte and NorthCarolina - Charlotte as well.

What I meant: should we change the NICKNAME of the our school to "Birmingham?" I know we are not changing the official name of UAB to university of Birmingham or any variation thereof.

You guys are correct, UNCC did not change the official name of its university to "charlotte," that is just their nickname.

My question was: would be cool or feasible or both to do the same for UAB?
