RE: 2014 Wrestling
We lose Curling to graduation. Festejo (133) was kicked off the team. So that's 2 starters we know we'll need to replace. I would also argue that 165 needs an upgrade & I'm not sure if Jeske's heart is in it. My only gripe with the program has been the amount of off-season turnover. We've had a lot of kids transfer/leave. Some for valid reasons. But it's kept us young for an abnormal amount of time. I think the crew he has now is his best by far. They seem to be hungry & willing to work. That wasn't always the case, which is why some left. Hopefully it'll start to bear fruit.

Being part of Martin at GB, if he is running the ODU team like he did our practices at GB some of these high school kids coming in to ODU may have never seen the intensity of his type of practices.

Certainly is. My only concern with the team is Coach Martin's knees as I hope he is around for a long long time. He has built himself quite the program.
All my time around Martin in the late 90s I never seen him stand upright. He had a hernia for years.

Trust me, he's not running them like that. You don't drill college guys collectively for 3 hours a day. It's a different league. Not saying the practices aren't tough, but the larger focus is on live wrestling & individualized technique.
It's more a quality of opposition adjustment than a workout adjustment. Winning state titles in your small pond is different than winning at this level. They're all state championship-level or better. Taking beatings for the first time in your life isn't an easy thing to adjust to. Figuring out how to stop it is even tougher.

makes sense. Most of my friends that wrestled in HS that were good enough to wrestle at the college level didn't last very long. a couple of them went to ODU.

4 ODU wrestlers placed at 2014 National Collegiate Open today. This is an open tournament for wrestlers who are backups. Some of the top programs in the nation send their backups to this tournament . A few wrestlers have went on to win NCAA national titles the next year.
Austin Eads 157 lbs. placed third
Kevin Johnson and Jacob Kingett both 149lbs. placed fifth and sixth
Austin Coburn 174lbs. placed fifth.

ODU's top three recruits wrestling for State Championships this weekend. At 138 California's Emilio Saavedra (#18 in the country at his weight) wrestles in the finals against #6. At 152 Penn's T.C. Warner (#3) wrestles against #11 in the finals. At 182 NJ's Joey Balboni (#14) is in the quarterfinals as the #2 seed. The #1 seed is the #1 182 in the country. Good luck guys.

Warner and Saavedra win state titles. Balboni loses to country's top 182 (6-4 in overtime) in the championship match. Great Job.
