It's more prevalent in middle TN, but I don't agree. It's basically a pulled pork sand which on top of a cornbread pancake. Traditional BBQ sand which should have been TN, IMO.

Correct, tnazz. Hoe cake is very much more prevalent in middle TN. Although I'm not familiar with it being related to an open face BBQ sandwich.

For those unfamiliar with the term, it comes from farm hands mixing water with meal and cooking a "pancake" on the hoe that they were using to plow/clean/weed the field with.

...and transitt is correct in his picture above. That's the real TN sandwich.....at least the part of TN that counts for anything.

They should change the name to Tourist's.

While Mothers tries to serve almost everything, their best item is still the Debris Po Boy

As others noted, many other restaurants have better Shrimp Po Boys or Jambalaya, but Mothers does the Debris (Roast Beef Drippings) right.

When I use to live in New Orleans...and use to cover Lafayette (heart of Acadiana), restaurants there easily make the best Shrimp Po Boys by far.

New Orleans, where the melting pot of cultures produces amazing dishes, Acadiana (area in/around Lafayette and around the Bayous where most of the Cajuns live), is the place to go if you want amazing Cajun dishes chow.

Refreshing to see an "outsider" recognize that there are differences between New Orleans and 'Cajun' cuisine. I've always termed the former style of cooking, creole.

If you ever find yourself in Lafayette again on a work day, make a point to try Dwyer's Cafe in the downtown area......my recommendation would be the pork roast plate lunch with eggplant dressing. Dayum. Just dayum.04-cheers

I don't get the Hoe Cake Denigration (possible episode of hit tv show?). I've never had pulled pork on hoe cake, but this makes me want to try it.

Pork just goes with corn. Whether it's carnitas on corn tortillas, or pork in a tamale, or ham and cornbread, it just works. So, consider the pulled pork hoe cake sandwich on my bucket list.

And the roast pork with broccoli rabe is now high on the list too. A good sandwich needs a balance of flavors, and that sounds like a winner.

04-cheers

Gotcha. Tourist trap is how many of us view the "can't miss!" Rendezvous in Memphis.

Despite what anyone on here or otherwise will tell you, those places are pretty much tourists and blue collar workers. Places that emphasize cheese wiz are pretty gross. I dont get cheese wiz on a cheesesteak. American or provolone only. If it has neon signs, you should probably avoid it. A lot of the better cheesesteak places are nondescript neighborhood storefronts.

If you're feeling really adventurous, the $100 wagyu cheesesteak at Barclay Prime is pretty damn good.

Willy Mae's in NOLA is one of the few tourist traps that really lives up to the hype. Amazing fried chicken, and ask for the sweet potato fries even if they are not on the menu.

Never in my life have I heard of a Hoecake. & I've been in TN a long time.

Hell, if anything food wise should be mentioned in TN, I'm sure most know where that would come from ...not Centerville
