you mean 1960 when in the semi finals Team USA beat the USSR on the way to the Hockey Gold medal.

It's true that 1960 in Squaw Valley was special but at that point it hadn't quite got to where the Russians fielded basically a pro team that stayed together all year while the US used college and minor leaguers. Both 1960 and 1980 are special to US hockey fans.

You are very correct in the description of the two teams. US won the Silver in 1956 so 1960 was a continuation of that. From 1964 through 1980 the Soviets were the best Hockey team in the world and that is what made 1980 special... the amateurs beat the professionals.

Both the 1960 and 1980 teams are special, but I do think that the 1960 team is basically forgotten. I do not forgive the Salt Lake City organizers for honoring the 1980 team with recreating the all for one moment of the medal podium as part of lighting the flame while not honoring the 1960 gold medalists.

Herb Brooks was the last cut from the 1960 team. That fact drove his career and his preparation of the 1980 team. Without the 1960 gold medal, there would never have been a 1980 Lake Placid Miracle.

One note... The coach of the 1960 Soviet team showed great sportsmanship when after the loss to the USA in the semifinals, he approached the US team and recommended they breath oxygen between shifts.

Second note... The Soviets showed incredible sportsmanship at Lake Placid when they just stood in disbelief as they observed the US team celebrate the win. They had not experienced losing.

I agree the '60 team is overlooked from most in the US. However, in Minnesota there is still a great deal of interest and respect for the team.

One of the top stories on the St. Louis NBC local network news last night was an "exclusive interview with T.J. Oshie's fiancee".

Safe to say he won't be paying for a beer in St. Louis for awhile.

Not that more than he already was - it's only a pool game?
