RE: Baseball - 2014 Season
I used to be a huge ODU baseball fan, but the administration clearly has no interest in elevating the program. I still go to a game or two a year, but it is frustrating. How in the world you could not capitalize on JV pitching for your program is beyond me. Better yet, Hampton Roads has produced a dozen or more pros (minor league included) in the last 10 years!

How about hiring a baseball coach with Hampton Roads ties that could actually keep some of the big talent here? Try what you did with Steve Martin and the wrestling program.

Their current coach grew up in Hampton and went to Hampton High School. I think Finwood was a great hire and he has really upgraded the talent level since taking over the program.

Well, Finwood is from HR and I think he's a great coach. The schools he's recruiting against in this area are consistently in the top five in the nation. He also has to recruit against MLB teams, which is something no other coach on campus has to do.

The best recruits in this area either go pro out of HS or go to a school where fans/students actually care about baseball. Been to the Bud lately? It's much better since Wood has arrived, and he's clearly trying to elevate this program, but for some retarded reason students and locals simply don't show up as often as they should. Perhaps it has something to do with the start times during the week? If I recall, a lot of games were starting between 3PM and 5PM in years past. Looking at this year's schedule, it looks like a lot of games start at 6PM or later, especially as the weather warms up, so that excuse goes away.

If baseball, beer, and beautiful women don't get people down to the Bud, nothing will. It's a program that will need an extremely lucky break to elevate above mediocrity.

Sorry to tell you but all the top high school wrestler from our area don't attend ODU. Last I check we only had one/ two from our area on scholarship and three walk-ons. UVA and VT get most the guys from here. VT does the best with keeping VA wrestlers in state.
